Re: ATL: IRMA - Hurricane - Discussion
Both models (GFS/Euro) have been consistent with wind gust forecasts for Sarasota County of 130-143 mph after 9 pm. Looks like it is going to be a long night.

I'm a little southwest of Orlando in Celebration. Rain rate is definitely picking up and we had a tornado warning earlier.
A little breezy but nothing crazy. Sounds like worst winds for us will be late this evening.

A Miami Herald article with a preliminary report from the Keys.

So people stayed on the Keys with no food... Just incredible. I'm sorry for their suffering, but this is just sheer recklessness.
http://www.miamiherald.com/news/weather ... 01982.html
Early Sunday morning, as the eye of the massive Hurricane Irma was about to hit Key West, conditions were dire in the Middle Keys city of Marathon.
Larry Kahn, editor of the Keynoter and an editor for FlKeysNews.com, reported from one of Monroe County’s four “refuges of last resort” — a shelter set up at Marathon High School on Sombrero Road, that power was out, there was no running water, and everything outside was submerged by storm surge and rain.
“Everything is underwater. I mean everything,” Kahn said.
To make matters worse, one of the estimated 50 people staying at the shelter died overnight. Kahn said he was told by a Monroe Sheriff’s Office deputy that the man died of natural causes.
“He was staying in one of the classrooms,” Kahn said. “Police came up, along with a couple of nurses who are here, actually, got everyone out of the room and sealed it off.”
With everyone’s food running low, a deputy told Kahn that other deputies were going to go into the school’s cafeteria and raid the kitchen to make sure everyone stayed fed.
“He told me everyone could be in this building for days,” Kahn said. “Everyone here seems to be just walking around in a fog.”

Outflow jet strengthening over last hr as #Irma's outflow feeds downstream ridge. Will aid mass evac & allow precip shield to expand over SE

The stated 130 mph might not tell the whole story. The wind warning says at 115mph on Doppler. Could be understated. Deep reds indicate increasing ferocity as landfall approaches. Gusts in Naples could be hellacious. Will watch for updates this afternoon.

Over SE US or SE FL. That RGEM radar model showed a crazy band setting up along coastal SE FL as Irma passed Naples

Light rain, winds picking up a little 16mph now. No heavy feeder bands thus far.

The reports are coming in all over SE FL.. we're getting hit hard down here by surge, hurricane force wind gusts, and damage reports coming in as well. Nothing catastrophic, but this will make news for sure.

I'm in South West Orlando. The rain has been a steady drizzle and very little wind to speak of. Funny how this stuff works sometimes. I'm sure the cells in the feeders will eventually get to us.

Weather will be going down hill soon, the first true feeder bands approaching Orlando, winds will continue to pick up , worst will be around 11 PM-5 AM.
