Good luck to them. The rest of the people around you won't feel the weight that's on your shoulders, and it's going to be hard to see how everyone who doesn't have family in the path can think about trivial stuff like boxing matches at a time like this.

I unfortunately got to know what that felt like this summer. I suppose way too many of us did.

Thank you for that, unfortunately too many people have felt that pit in your stomach this season. My dad is on the SE side of the island about 2 miles from the shore, he will not leave. He is 81 yrs old, I am so mad at him. I have alot of friends and family in Florida also, it has been a long few weeks for somany people. My heart is breaking for all in the path of these storms.

Praying for your dad.

Thank you

If there is a bright side as compared to Irma...hurricane force winds only go out 15-20 miles from the center

Granada is still not fully recovered from Ivan 13 years ago, and it was "only" a Cat 3 for that impact. Consider recovery donations, everyone.

Do we have a good radar loop view of this storm at the moment?

I believe the southern half is more populated.

Thanks for the response. Not good for those there.

Well, the capital is to the south-west, and most cities seem to be around the southern half of the island.

This would be the second Cat. 5 landfall of the year, too. Only other time this happened in the Atlantic was 2007 iirc (Dean/Felix).

EDIT: Whoops, ninja'd.

Dominica is only 16 miles wide though at its widest point.

I find it hard to believe that I woke up this morning to a 85 mph category one hurricane, and now looking at a 160 mph category five monster :( I'm praying for all in Maria's path.

There's some open water between now and PR though, time for ERC and expanding wind field...
