Just to put things into perspective, the sprawling HP system that brought the sharp, quick cold back in January of last winter was at best 1040s up in Canada, 1030s down the plains.

This coming high is likely to be a behemoth, probably strongest since winter of 2013/2014 maybe since Feb 2011

The Feb 2011 was ridiculous. Super cold with a tail end snowstorm that gave me 6” IMBY. Went out that day and shot spectacular pics of various birds stuck in the anomalous cold. 16 degrees and dumping. I’d love that.

I'm rooting for the Canadian to be correct on us seeing some snow, but not that cold of temperatures. Interested to see tonight's 0z model runs. Canadian has shown frozen precip for us in 2 straight runs. Let's see if it can stay consistent.

NAM is nearing the end of it's run. Cold is centered over Montana (most ideal for Texas trajectory) and high pressure is 1060mb HP entering the US with snow in NW Texas

Edit: It's 1061mb, getting up there closer to the record territory.

I'm starting to think that this event may be close to the Feb 2011 event for us in the RGV. Feb 2 we had temperatures in the mid 30s all day and the following day it was in the low 30s with upper 20s towards the afternoon with freezing drizzle.

NAM seems to be showing the beginning of a winter storm at the end of the run...

Based on the latest trends of short range model data if I lived in Southern OK down into NorthWest, North Central TX I’d keep a watchful eye on this one! Could most certainly turn into a higher end storm before all is said and done...

Not to sound ungrateful for any bit of precipitation but I sure would love something more than a freezing drizzle! :froze:

Ntxw, yeah that was the ultimate behemoth Arctic Highs of them all. My , my. What a record breaker that one was for so many. Remeber it like yesterday. Temperature dropped to 11 degrees in Jacksonville, FL for this outbreak. That record held until the January 1985 arctic outbreak , which dropped the temp to 7 degrees at NWS office here, which is the all-time mark here and still stands.

Upstream though the GFS is holding more back the vorticity, what the CMC and Euro were doing

Unfortunately not. Energy is farther east this run through 120 hours, looks dry...

0z Canadian looks like it still shows some light frozen precip across south central and southeast TX Monday into Tuesday. However it looks drier than the previous 2 runs.

And yeah, GFS is trending warmer.
