Sometimes there are other reasons too. One of my mother's best friends lives in Panama City. She certainly has the financial resources to evac. But she's quite elderly, and broke her leg recently and is in a nursing home. What does she do? My mom lost the number for the nursing home so we don't know. Maybe she figured a way out and maybe she didn't. But if she didn't it's not because she's stupid or irresponsible. She's just limited.

OK. Thanks for the clarification mods and others. Devastating hurricane no matter how you look at it. Strong 4 /Cat 5 whatever. Effects still the same.

I am just wiped out and left for no more words after tracking this monster.

No doubt. I would expect that Mexico Beach is leveled along with Tyndal AFB. And Panama City is likely suffering severe damage.

I don't think there is much difference in high end cat for or 5. You can't be more dead or have things more destroyed. When these things are coming you leave. Anything stronger than cat 2 and we get out.

If you had ever told me we could have cat 4/5 strengthing to landfall in the panhandle In October i would have said no way... would have said no way last week. Consider the game changed... will no longer consider it a given the NGOM majors will weaken a bit at landfall. Not that it was ever a rule...just seemed to be that way the 100 years or so. But we know Mikey is a greater than 100 year storm.

No one could have expected this. This will go down as a Category 5. I am so worried about loss of life due to underestimation of the strength of Michael.

@ericfisher — Panama City is getting raked. Long time being spent in the eyewall. Eye itself went right over Tyndall AFB. #Michael

Mexico Beach is such a sweet, calm little spot. Hopefully it doesn't look like I fear it will in a few more hours.

Has anyone heard anything about Port St. Joe? I know some people who are riding out the storm about a mile inland

Question. Do they normally issue extreme wind warnings along with hurricane warnings? I don't remember ever seeing that before, and I thought they just issued hurricane warnings for landfalls. The only extreme wind warnings I've seen before were for non-tropical systems.

Hope we can get some good pressure readings in the eye. Too bad the station at Tyndall went down. The landfall pressure could be as low as 915mb
