continuing to rapidly strengthen. The maximum winds have
increased to near 130 mph (215 km/h) with higher gusts. This makes
Delta a category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind
Scale.

So why shouldn't Delta go completely 2020, and decide to be the first system ever in the Atlantic to go over 200 MPH??? The way this storm is strengthening I definitely think it will be a strengthening Cat 5 when it hits the tip of the Yucatan, and might only drop down to a borderline Cat 4/5 while traversing the very flat land of the Yucatan, but unfortunately what might happen with that land interaction is to have the wind field expand with it.

This is terrifying to watch. We're in for a historic storm here.

Do not take anything I say seriously as a form of meteorological prediction. I am not a meteorologist; I don't think being in law school translates to any special knowledge. I am just a somewhat bullish amateur watcher.

Independent of how strong it'll eventually get, this is already one for the history books. It just jumped over cat 3 and became a cat 4 like it was nothing within ~20 - 30 minutes.

I'm literally watching this and comparing it to penny stock charts that sky rocket on insane volume.

From 1.00 to 8.00 in 5 minutes.

Maybe sub 900 isn't so far-fetched anymore.

Isn't Wilma's record like 2nm? This could get pretty close to that

Having been declared a tropical storm at 1200 UTC October 5, Delta could easily SMASH the record of fastest intensification of a tropical cyclone from Tropical Depression to Category 5 Hurricane which is currently held by Wilma (54 hours). Delta's last 2/8ET advisory as a depression was 0600 UTC October 5 so if Delta can attain Category 5 status BEFORE 1200 UTC October 7 (0600 UTC 10/07 or earlier), then it will beat Wilma's record. I think at this rate, Delta could hit Category 5 as early as 2100 UTC today but I will settle on 0000 UTC October 7, beating Wilma's record by 12 HOURS.

Absolutely mind-blowing :double:

VDM confirms pinhole eye. I'm shaking right now. Wilma was 3 or 2 I believe.

Warm pool with the highest OHC is still ahead of Delta.

A 40 kt TS to an exploding 115 kt pinhole eye Cat 4 in only 24 hours...holy crap. Once they eye really starts clearing out, it will likely be mere hours before it becomes a Cat 5.

I am only a meteorology enthusiast who knows a decent amount about tropical cyclones. Look to the professional mets, the NHC, or your local weather office for the best information.

I’m still skeptical about sub-900 due to Delta’s size. Sub-930 I think is likely at this point. I’m praying for the folks in Mexico. I hate to see them going through this after a crappy tourist year due to the pandemic.

This has to be a record, right? I admittedly haven't been tracking storms nearly as long as you have, but I have never seen intensification like this in any basin (including my years as a lurker on the forum). My rather extreme 899 mbar prediction might be more realistic than I previously thought...
