Laura's surge was not as widespread as originally forecast....the 17' recorded surge was in a rural area.

With Sally, Mobile Bay got lucky because where Sally hit. The surge there was no where near the forecast in Mobile Bay.

While most of us on here know why the left side of the storm will have much less surge or even lower water levels, this is not the case for many in the warning area. When the surge is significantly lower than forecast(as a result of being on the left side), this can lead to complacency for future storms.

As for Laura: That's not how the surge forecasts work. The given values have a 10% chance of being exceeded for each area, and the values are given as a potential for surge. Because there's track uncertainty these will cover a wider area than surge actually occurs in. The 15-20ft area was all prone to surge at that level with potential track deviations. A more specific surge forecast would be misleading and could be catastrophic with last minute shifts.

Think NHC + the media needs to work on messaging because A LOT of people missed this with Laura, seemingly you included.

This is a question, not an analysis. How are we getting forecasts of intense winds when water temps have fallen below 80 degrees? Is it like the storms which remain intense after they lose their tropical characteristics as they head north?

Looks to be coming back to life.
Massive tower with tons of lightning firing off.
Shock wave extending out 360 degrees.
Appears the shear is abating.
Much better outflow on the east half of the CoC indicating the UL jet from the ARWB has lessened.

Stronger IR presentation than last night.
Longer duration and wider area off-scale cloud tops.

Looks like it's improving by the minute, not sure how the landfall will impact this reorganization. This is definitely at least a high end cat 2 atm, I think NHC keeping it as a cat 3 is a good, safe choice for now. Not much of a point in making it a cat 2 now if it's a cat 3 again in 30 minutes.

Well friends here i go again lol... tomorrow is packing & picking up day. Then my family & I are heading to Texas on Thursday morning. I pray this is the last time I have to leave this year. Again most of my sons are against leaving. I dont like it, it, but what can I do? They young adults now. So they will try to keep the lights on & cameras rolling.

On the brightside, most of our stuff is still packed lol and I get to visit my sister again. I've seen our little town get turned upside down before. I worry about all the young ppl who have not like my kids. I will do my best to keep you guys updated if the need arises. Hopefully like Laura, our little town gets spared again. Part of our levee system keeps breaching during these storms & im worried it will surely happen again-worse this time. As for my kids, they will be 8ft up. As long as the house can take any storm surge. Most houses are old wooden-framed homes.

With that said, I'm going back to bed. We probably going to have a big day, today.

Warm core took somewhat of a beating.
However an offset and very deep, massive cold pool has developed.
Will likely allow it to cross the Yucatan relatively unscathed.
If stays intact in the GoM, could help fire convection in moderate shear maybe up to 20 knts.
If the cold pool and warm core stack, then this could really go to town in a hurry.
The deeper the cold pool, the more enthalpy is released from the water to the air.
Its the difference in temperature that drives the heat exchange.
So, if SST's are relatively low, the heat exchange could still be high if the cold pool is very cold.

I don't want to even think about it again. The latest GEFS Model shows another impact (I live at the bottom of the first 1). I live at the intersection of RITA and HUMBERTO and I am just now getting the trees from Laura to the curbside for pick up as well as fighting the insurance to get what I paid for.

What the hell happened to this thing? It looked to be pushing cat 5 strength when I checked on it during the late afternoon and now it looks like your typical sloppy, struggling cat 2 hurricane.

Incredible.

Deepest part of the cold pool is about 0.5 km above the water.
Very efficient heat exchange from the ocean.

I'm also only catching up now after not being online for about 8 hours, but a hot tower crashing into the proto-pinhole eye about 12 hours ago seemed to have caused some sort of ERC combined with some shear.

Latest GFS run also says that Delta is currently at its weakest, even slightly strengthening while over Yucatan.

A very low CAPE pool just north of the Yucatan suddenly disappears in a matter of 30 mins.
