Re: Deep South Winter 2024-2025
Our forecast high is 47 on Thursday, after having a low that morning of 26.. I really can’t see it getting past the mid to upper 30s since there will be clouds and precip in the area, I think there is the potential for a major forecast bust for Thursday into Friday. Could be a lot closer to having frozen precip than what they’re forecasting

North GA and upstate SC may be looking at the most winter weather we've had in years. Hoping for snow, but knowing our luck, expecting more sleet and ice
. Either way, things should shut down for a day or so from Columbia northward

Mostly a sleet event here in E Central NC. Still it was fun to see a few snowflakes coming down. Plenty of moisture came through, but it wasn't quite cold enough to fall as snow.
It's all fun as long as the power stays on (as it has so far).

I believe we will have another freezy precip shot for the deep south in a week or so.

Anyone seen the latest Euro?! Absolutely frigid. If anyone has access and can post any images of potential snow I would appreciate it.

12Z GFS with a southern snow storm next week. Calling for 2-3 inches around the Baton Rouge area.

Hey Bob. 06z calling for 21" in the Baton Rouge area (just NW of you). haha. No chance. It's also got 15" in southern Mississippi and over a foot in New Orleans which has never happened in recorded history. The most snow ever recorded in New Orleans was 8 inches way back on February 15, 1895. The next closest I'm aware of would be 12/31/1963 when they got 4.5".
Chances of this happening? Pretty close to zero. But it may be onto something as far as an active southern jet.

I don’t think the GFS distinguishes between snow and sleet/ice. I don’t think most of what the GFS shows in SELA is falling as snow. It would be a horrible icing event, though. Someone correct me if I am wrong.

It does in the model run (pink/magenta vs. blue hues). I don't think it does in the accumulation summary which it shows at a 10:1 ratio. It's literally impossible for there ever to be an ice storm that drops 10+ inches of ice in the deep south. So I'm thinking it's finding an inch or two of sleet/freezing rain and just showing them as heavy snowfall accumulation. Still pretty neat to see on a model.

Re: Deep South Winter 2024-2025
Someone on the TX thread said it is showing 2 inches of sleet and that it does not. It makes sense if you look at the projected radar. Most of SELA is in deep pink which is heavy sleet.

Yeah, that corresponds roughly with the 21" in Pointe Coupee or whatever if it's 10:1 ratio (though I don't know if snow to ice is the same as snow to water which I assume it isn't exact). Nevertheless, a 2" sleet storm would be pretty nuts for the Gulf South. I'm guessing GFS will back off some as it has been overemphasizing cold and winter weather in the longer term all winter long. This being 7 days out is a little closer in time.
