On Saturday night I conducted a jebwalk in which I walked 2.1 miles around the Potomac Mills Mall in Woodbridge, VA, in 9-degree conditions with N winds at 5 to 10 mph. The dewpoint was -3 degrees.
That jebwalk was cold. It was interesting, and likely one of the coldest jebwalks I have ever experienced in recent years.
Now, Enter tonight.
Same jebwalk, but MUCH WARMER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It was 39 degrees with 30-degree dewpoints, and S winds at 5 to 10 mph.
I had on a thin coat with no gloves and no hat.
I could hardly believe what I felt during that jebwalk tonight.
What I felt was, it felt like it was 60 degrees with 45-degree dewpoints. I could hardly believe it. It felt like 60-degree weather out there tonight, on my jebwalk.
My hands were NOT cold, they were warm, exposed to the weather, and even sweaty. You know folks, except for the fact that it felt a little coolish out there tonight, I could almost have been back down on the Outer Banks at Nags Head, taking a leisurely jebwalk along the beach in slightly coolish (68 degrees / 55 degree dewpoint) weather. It was just unbelievable.
This peculiar effect is what I long ago termed, Thermal Perceptual Relativity. Very cool weather, such as the kind of very cool air we experienced here last Saturday (A 9 degree temperature / -3 degree dewpoint) chills the body so much that only 2 days later, tonight, with milder conditions (39 degree temperature / 30 degree dewpoint) that the body perceives the TPR effect. Very chilly weather then mild weather produces relativistic thermal perceptions to the human brain.
Again, tonight's 39 / 30 T / D spread jebwalk felt very much like 60's weather conditions, because of 9 degree weather 2 nights ago.
What is even more amazing is, I can still vividly recall the very first jebwalk I took this past fall when temperatures during my jebwalk were in the upper 40s. That was probably in late October at night, when I took my first 47 degree jebwalk. The T/D spread was probably 47/25. I can still remember what I went through back then during that jebwalk: My hands were cold and they hurt and I was cold at 47 degrees. It was a difficult jebwalk because at that time, I was accustomed to 70 degree jebwalks and 47 felt like 20 degrees.
That experience makes tonight's 39 degree jebwalk that felt like 60s weather, all the more hard to believe.
WOW.
