More to the point, coriolis, they hate us for our ideas AND ideals. They want our wealth and power, but their own faith restricts them from the dynamism and entrepreneurship necessary to effect such drastic changes..so in a strange sense, they hate US for what we have...and hate themselves for coveting it.

Remember that Islam has not changed since the 7th Century; they had no Renaissance, no Reformation or Enlightenment to spark those changes we in the West have enjoyed, far removed from our own Middle Ages mentality of static, unquestionable "truth".

They did have their intellectuals, and if left alone could conceivably have grown and changed; the Mongols destroyed all that when they invaded from the East in the 12th-13th Centuries, and laid low that sole center of enlightenment and inquiry in the Islamic world at that time (note this, folks)...BAGHDAD.

first off, welcome back streetsoldier. i am glad to see you are feeling well enough to post again. please take care of yourself :)

and here is a shocker to all. i agree with you streetsoldier. the fundamentalist muslims want to bring the world back to the 7th century, and try to live in that type of world (as do hasidic jews, amish to a degree)

it was some of the islamic knowledge that led to the renissance during the middle ages though, their scientific knowledge, arabic numbers instead of roman numerals etc.
but it is the jealousy of the american way of life that fuels their hatred to a degree. the rest is a virulent and in their minds (although it is misguided IMO) belief that they are there to "cleanse" the world of the infidel.

peace

Well said Bill. But it's also more complicated than that too. In another thread Aslkahuna reminded us that there is a strong Philippine/al Qaeda/terrorist connection, which is also evidenced by the scrutiny that intelligence sources are giving to that region along with travel warnings. Fanatical factions in the Philippines have been terrorizing and assassinating christians and others just like their Mideast counterparts; yes - they communicate. Yes, they work together. This is not just a problem with terrorists in the mideast. It's a mindset across the board that we are the infidels and they are going to save 'the world as they know it' -TWATKI- by eliminating as many of us as possible. Now just because the world as they know it is back in the 7th century doesn't faze them; as Bill says, they're ticked that they're not us -but they could be, which is the sorriest story yet. They could live the dream we all dream, live the dream that some of them dream - to be free and live in a democracy not under a dictatorship of a leader who will ruthelessly exterminate his own people... - Instead they just run back to the olden days.

Interesting that you mentioned the Philippines, and the Islamic presence there. We have run afoul of Muslims there for over a century...they were once called "Moros".

One of these guys, nearly naked and armed only with a machete, ran through an entire U.S. infantry regiment, took a multitude of bullets, and still managed to kill a U.S. dignitary and his wife...his intended targets...before dying.

This incident was directly responsible for the development of the U.S. M-1911 .45 auto "slabside" pistol; intended to drop a Moro with one round.

Interesting things you won't get on the Discovery Channel, from....streetsoldier

Well it's said we should learn from history or we're bound to repeat it. Plus any prominent world power like the Roman Empire will finally disentegrate from within itself, which is something to ponder given the great Greek/Roman empires and cultures of the past. We've never been in a situation before where one part of the world has advanced so many centuries ahead of a collection of others, and now we clash. There is no game book for this. No Discovery Channel as you say (although aslkahuna did mention something of this awhile back in some post), no one to point at and say - gee, they really screwed that up, we'll do it this way instead... That's why analyses will only carry one so far; at some point it becomes a WAG - wild a$$ guess.

http://www.cnn.com/2003/WORLD/asiapcf/s ... index.html

Plenty of good information is being analized as names, adresses, phone numbers and possible future attacks haved been found in his laptop so let's hope that more top Al-Qaeda people are caught and especially Osama Bin Laden.

In spite of people who think our Government can't do more than one thing at a time it seems to me that the war on terrorism is proceeding! :D It won't be long before someone here in the US protests that he may be undergoing illegal interrogation...TOO BAD!!!

Cycloneye the reply to your earlier statement here uptop regarding the 'finders fee' for providing information that led to the arrest of Mohammed - an Egyptian man has now received $27 million with an extra $2 million that he's requesting to relocate his whole family to Britian - - guess that's supposed to be like our internal victim witness relocation package
