This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

ridge forming in sw caribbean over disturbed area

#1 Postby rbaker » Tue Jul 13, 2004 2:48 pm

wv image showing the upper level low moving west and weaker today allowing a ridge to develop around the sw carib. With the trough coming down the eastern US, this could yank something out of the nw caribbean in a day or so.

Good analysis, Rbaker -- and BTW, welcome to S2K. I know you'll be an asset to all S2K weather watchers. Check your S2K messages.

I'm certainly with you at this point. This area of disturbed weather has persisted, appears to be developing ridging aloft and now looks to be moving more Northerly toward the Yucatan Channel. With the trough developing over Eastern CONUS this could spell a scenario for a northward movement into the GOM and threaten FL. if it develops further. It has certainly taken center stage in the Atlantic basin where possible development is concerned. I'll be very surprised if NHC doesn't mention it in the TWO this evening.

Here is the latest...Too close to land :( for now anyway...

Code: Select all

A WESTWARD-MOVING TROPICAL WAVE IS PRODUCING CLOUDINESS AND
THUNDERSTORMS OVER THE EXTREME WESTERN CARIBBEAN SEA AND ADJACENT
LAND AREAS.  SIGNIFICANT DEVELOPMENT IS NOT LIKELY DUE TO THE
PROXIMITY TO LAND.  HOWEVER...THIS SYSTEM COULD PRODUCE LOCALLY
HEAVY RAINS OVER PORTIONS OF CENTRAL AMERICA DURING THE NEXT DAY OR
SO.

western caribbean disturbance

#5 Postby rbaker » Tue Jul 13, 2004 9:26 pm

agree its pretty close to land, but unlike others down in this area recently, this one seems to be hanging offshore and moving more towards nw caribbean. Plus shear with tutt seems to be moving out somewhat and ridging overtaken if its moving nw with system. Has anyone seen any reports from Belize or Roatan?

All I heard of was by another poster that winds are coming from the NNE. Meaning some type of circulation. The NHC also says no tropical storm formation expected through Thursday. They maybe pushing it.
Just the waiting game now!

sw caribbean weaker

not as much convection as yesterday, not as optismistic as yesterday of something forming down there. Attention goes to the wave east of the windwards, right now convection is staying together with hardly any shear, but needs to persist for a day or so for concern.
