A letter to the President

I wrote a letter to Mr.Bush today to tell him of the problems we are having in Fort Walton. Urban development has gone haywire...they plan to destroy the south's only indian temple mounds and burial ground, the sites date back to 10,000 B.C. And the indian Temple mound was once Camp Walton which was the main factor of finding this city. Now they are threating Eglin AFB and Hurlburt Field with relocation since they need more land to develop on. Well thats not going well with the city and we are protesting against it. They asked for someone to write the President and i did...i sent it today and hoping for a reply as soon as possible.

I hope you worded it tactfully enough not to offend his Christian sensibilities, FWBHurricane. 10,000 years would pre-date Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, by what, about 4,000 years?

Why Shrub though? Tallahassee won't step in on the people's behalf?

If it doesn't work out and the developers win, think of it as your corporate tax breaks at work and all the great jobs they'll be creating.

Ed, I have always found that my Representative (Jo Ann Emerson, R-MO) and Senators (KIt Bond and Jim Talent (R-MO) are my first and best line of inquiry...and I DO get personal confirmation from them, every time.

Ms. Emerson, FI...when at last I met her earlier this year, she said that it was nice to finally meet me (?) in person, and looked forward to hearing from me in the future at any time...that she recalled my name at all shows me that she DOES read letters from, and listen to, her constituents.

That's a good idea, Bill. The times I wrote to the Pres. was to coach him on the delivery of his speeches rather than being in regards to national issues. Maybe, the tips filtered in to him even without a personal reply. But in regards to issues, I will write to my congressional representatives.

I'm in a similar boat, though...after I saw some glaring inconsistencies in the new Army "all-terrain" digital BDU, I wrote to the (US Army)Chief of Public Affairs, Pentagon, with suggestions to be forwarded; ain't heard a thing since (6 weeks now).

I may never hear anything back...but, if even ONE of my suggestions saves an American soldier's life, I wil be content.

We have been at it for years with this case, we went to the senate, we went to the mayor of our town, Jeb Bush, and even Congress. Now we are addressing this to higher athority.

So how then do they justify disturbing the sacred remains of an ancient culture?

Can you imagine picking up pieces of Arlington National Cemetary or Punchbowl to move in city condos?

The cries of outrage would be horrendous in today's atmosphere.

It happened here in Galveston, but no one is in an uproar.

They couldn't bury all the dead from the hurricane so they shoved them off into the Gulf. But that didn't work and most washed back up on shore. So they built huge funeral pyres and burned the bodies because thousands of rotting, wet bodies in September heat is not a pleasant thing. Those of us here are aware that those ashes are buried all around the island and under the parts where the island was built up behind the Seawall. We all live on it and drive over it everyday.

And they built a Wal-Mart at the site where St. Mary's Orphanage once stood -- where 10 nuns and 90 children perished in the hurricane.

That would be a good point to raise in your letter. I've had several responses to letters I wrote to my representative, John Mica. I think it's great that you wrote a letter to the President. But to be honest, he is a busy man and doesn't have time to answer his mail personally. His staff will handle your letter and I'm sure forward anything pertinent to him. Get a petition going in your neighborhood and have people sign it. Make copies of all those signatures and forward to all levels of govt in your area. Considering that election year is near, multitudes of signatures should have some of them wanting to help, in hopes of you all not voting against them. Good luck!
