Special Weather Statement

Statement as of 5:48 am EDT on August 5, 2004


... There is a slight risk of severe thunderstorms across central
North Carolina this afternoon...

.Skywarn spotters...
Skywarn spotter activation may be needed this afternoon... mainly
south and east of Interstate 85 after 1 PM through 7 PM. Spotters
are encouraged to report threatening weather of any kind to the
National Weather Service.

.Synoptic pattern...
A cold front is expected to move across central North Carolina this
afternoon... reaching the coastal plain in the early evening.
Scattered showers and thunderstorms will develop ahead and along
this front... some of which could become severe.

.Hazardous weather details...
A band of showers and thunderstorms is expected to develop ahead and
along the cold front as it pushes east across the area. This...
combined with an upper level disturbance and very warm moist
air... some storms will intensify and may become severe. The main
threat from these storms will be strong... damaging winds. Some large
hail is possible. The strong storms are expected to move east of the
area in the early evening.

Emergency management officials and local storm spotter groups
should closely monitor the latest forecasts and statements from
the National Weather Service.

Stay tuned to NOAA Weather Radio and other local media for further
details or updates.

Another statement will issued around noon.

Yeah, I wish... but we were in a STW last night and got a warning.. so its all good. I was a bit disappointed that they took us out of the slight risk yesterday, but oh well.

SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH FOR PORTIONS OF

NORTHEAST GEORGIA
CENTRAL AND EASTERN NORTH CAROLINA
NORTHERN SOUTH CAROLINA
SOUTHEAST VIRGINIA
COASTAL WATERS

EFFECTIVE THIS THURSDAY AFTERNOON AND EVENING FROM 1235 PM UNTIL
800 PM EDT.

HAIL TO 2 INCHES IN DIAMETER...THUNDERSTORM WIND GUSTS TO 70
MPH...AND DANGEROUS LIGHTNING ARE POSSIBLE IN THESE AREAS.

THE SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH AREA IS ALONG AND 75 STATUTE MILES
NORTH AND SOUTH OF A LINE FROM 40 MILES EAST OF ELIZABETH CITY
NORTH CAROLINA TO 30 MILES SOUTHWEST OF ANDERSON SOUTH CAROLINA.

Special Weather Statement

Statement as of 3:14 PM EDT on August 5, 2004


For the northwest and northeast Piedmont... including The Triad and
Triangle areas... conditions in the lower atmosphere have become less favorable for severe storms in terms of large hail or damaging winds. Thus... Severe Thunderstorm Watch number 711 has been discontinued. The Severe Thunderstorm Watch continues for the remainder of central North Carolina until 800 PM EDT.

Even though the watch has been dropped in the northwest and
northeast Piedmont... scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms will continue into the evening hours. Gusty winds of 30 to 40 mph... small hail and dangerous cloud-to-ground lightning are still
possible. People are reminded that if you can hear thunder... you
are close enough to a storm to be hit by lightning. Take cover if thunderstorms are in the area.
