For those in the JAX area who think that

This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

For those in the JAX area who think that

They are Invisible --- here are some NOTABLE storms which came very close to you.

In 1945 TWO hurricanes came very close to the JAX area, Hurricane 1 and Hurricane #9

Then we have Hurricane #5 in 1946:

Passed just to the West of the JAX area -- Made Landfall near TB.

Hurricane EASY in 1950 was another that passed very close to the JAX area though wakened to a TS after making landfall as a CAT 3 storm Just north of the Tampa area:

Hurricane King was another Passed just west of JAX

Hurricane Donna in 1960 came very close.

Then we have Cleo and Dora in 1963

Hurricanes Abby and Gladys in 1968 (abby weakened to a TS)

Hurricane David skimmed the coast as a CAT 2 – again coming close to JAX.

remember just because the eye or the center of a storm does not pass DIRECTLY over you head does not mean that you will not be significantly affected by it.

That 1945 storm looked like a tough one for MIA.......surprised Jax has had so few direct hits, though.

I think it has more to do with the geography of the coastline in that area rather than anything else. Plus, remember, JAX is a City -- which is a VERY VERY small area in comparison to the rest of the east coast; making a direct hit even less probable.

But the point is it does NOT take a direct hit for JAX to feel the effects of a system and possibly significantly so.

These storms came very close as did Charley... My experience from Charley was much less than expected--Light rain and breezy. Hopefully nothing else comes towards us this year as it will take a while to get over my bad decision to evac and I will probably stay :(

IF there is another situation like this, just listen to whatever Duval county emergency managers tell you to do. if they tell you to get out or evacuate, DO IT.

Hurricane Dora in 1964 was the one I was thinking about-it came directly from the ocean and slammed into the coast close to JAX as a Cat 3. JAX definitely had more than light winds and rain-they got clobbered as did St. Augustine. Dora was also a large storm in size.
