cape_escape wrote:Where did Camille strike, and what year? I think I've heard of it before, but a bit clouded on it.
Camille struck the Mississippi Coast at Bay St. Louis on August 17, 1969. Official sustained winds recorded were in the 190 mph range if I remember correctly and a gust to 220 mph was recorded at Kessler Air force Base near Biloxi. There are other threads in this forum about it since it was just the 35th Anniversary.

That is the address where I got this information, but, for some reason, I can't seem to get it to work now. Anyway, have to wonder about the accuracy of that 117kt/135mph wind gust from Kissimmee. [/list]

Huckster next time use Code instead of quote, this should make it easier to understand.

cape_escape wrote:How would I go about finding out what the wnd reports were for Cape Coral? They said on the news that they were Cat 2 winds at least, and I heard themention of 90-100 MPH with higher gusts.
Lee and Charlotte county are located in the Tampa (KTBW) county warning area....so that office would be the one to issue the same type information.
I'm also awaiting the Public Information Statement from the KTBW forecast office regarding Charley's peak winds and tides in their CWA. Here's the url to their website..

I Like this video of Charleys damage best...
because it shows the awesome force of these storms ....I know peoples homes got destroyed but I'd rather watch some thing like this get blowed away over a house! note on the video I know these type structures usually are the first to go but this seems to be a very large well built structure that gets picked apart like buzzards on road kill....enjoy! you can tell when the eyewall arrives

I can't say what damaged what, but I do know that it seemed like we were getting another "tornado watch" announcement in Pinellas county every five minutes.
And I definitely had the feeling in Wauchula there was tornado damage (as others have mentioned, because of the damage pattern), but I don't know how accurate that feeling is.

An amusing little story of using Charley lemons to make lemonade:

Preliminary hurricane Charley report from Tampa WSFO
I found this quite interesting....especially a couple of peak gusts recorded from the Punta Gorda area....173 mph (150 kt) atop Charlotte Medical Center and 160 mph (139 kt) at Charlotte County airport (with both anemometers destroyed...so even higher gusts likely occurred).
