Adopt a Dog, Don't Buy "New"
Well, now Rocky, my 1.5 year old Siberian Husky in the avatar, has a new little sister. I got a 6 week old Rotty mix from the Animal shelter. She was in a kennel with her 2 sisters. She also had 3 brothers, but they were already adopted. It is so sad seeing these pets at the shelter. Mine and her bros and sisters were found as strays--AT 2 WEEKS OLD!!! She is the cuteset little thing, she can be held in one hand and only her head and butt stick out a little bit. If you want a dog, dont go to a pet store or a breeder, go to the "pound". There are so many innocent dogs that need good homes and unless you plan on breeding, please adopt. I did get Rocky from a breeder, and for about a third of what you normally buy them for and he comes from a champion blood line. But I also wanted to get a chick husky to breed them and have little Rocky's because they are so cute and lovable, but my girlfriend refused to get another husky because they are too hairy and shed too much...just ask Rainband, when he comes over, he cant wear black! The same goes for any other pet, look into adopting if you're interested in a pet, it was so sad to see all of those dogs and puppies there crying, wanting to be loved.

There are just so many animals in these places that shouldn't be there. Have you ever watched Animal Cops? Its so sad to see what happens to these animals and the conditions they came from and they just need to be loved in a good home.

Andrew - our family dream was to rescue a dog from a shelter. But my oldest daughter back then was very afraid of dogs and most available were almost fully grown (her dad wanted a big dog). Even at 8 months old some were big and they were so excited to see someone walk by their cage. Our daughter would run to the car. This fear came out of nowhere it seemed like also - she had never been attacked. Only thing we could ever figure out was that a dog she had to walk past to get to school would bark a lot - well, wouldn't you if you were in a fenced in yard? She was told this dog was mean, but it wasn't - it was sweet, it just wanted the kids to stop and pet it. Long story short, we visited shelters for months, puppies were not available we were told my our local SPCA, they held them for a few weeks for shots and deworming. Then friends said get a puppy since that would be the only way to get her over her fear. We settled on a Golden Retriever since they're so gentle. Like you we didn't intend to get a pedigreed dog, from a breeder (thankfully it wasn't a puppymill) in the country. That did it - Nina got over her fear within a few weeks. Went on to dog sit in the neighborhood, watching a Husky for one. And staying overnight at their house to sit with the dog!
But I still would suggest people check out shelters. It breaks my heart so many dogs (and cats) need good homes.
Enjoy the new puppy! As for shedding, we have that problem too. It's just something you learn to put up with. What you get back is worth so much more! (our dog Hope is pictured with my family photo in the Gallery here).
