The local news last night here in Cola, SC was like watching storm stories. There was footage of 3 separate twisters including a huge waterspout striking Hilton Head that had multiple funnels revolving around eachother.

While we're watching and waiting for Ivan down here in Miami, my family is getting washed out from Frances. I just talked to my dad and he said they have lost water and are supposed to not have it back for a day or more.

Asheville is really hurting right now. The water treatment plant which serves the entire city is under water, so basically the city of Asheville and surrounding neighborhoods have no water as we speak.

For the pros, why does Frances continue to generate so many tornadoes after having weakened to a TD? Sorry - Im a newbie...

There is still a really strong wind field just off the surface from the SE. There is tremendous low-level directional shear (change in wind with height). What allows for so many tornadoes is the very high moisture content in the lower levels of the atmosphere - that way the updraft starts very low to the ground so the storm bases are very low. W/ a low storm base and rotation inolved it really doesn't take much to spin these up. I heard earlier that this is almost a record for a tropical system. I believe Beulah had close to 96 so we may yet beat that.

How far north should she continue to produce tornadoes? I guess I am asking if I should be concerned here. Or is my only concern the river?

Im in SE PA and have similar concerns.... FYI - I read this in the NYC AFD

HOWEVER...WE HAVE SOME SEVERE WEATHER POTENTIAL THURSDAY. AS THE
REMNANTS OF FRANCES MOVE NNEWD THROUGH PA...VERY JUICY AIR WILL
CONTINUE TO FLOW NWD THROUGH THE WARM SECTOR. THINKING THAT
DEWPOINTS WILL TOUCH 73-76F IN MOST PLACES. WARM SECTORS AROUND
THESE PARTS AREN'T USUALLY ACCOMPANIED BY MUCH VERTICAL WIND SHEAR.
HOWEVER...ON THURSDAY...THE REMNANTS OF FRANCES WILL SUPPLY SOME FOR
US. 0-1KM SHEAR VALUES WILL LIKELY BE ON THE ORDER OF 20-30 KT AS
LLJ REALLY NEVER LEAVES. THE ONLY LIMITING FACTOR FOR SEVERE WEATHER
WILL BE INSTABILITY...WITH WEAK LAPSE RATES IN PLACE. HOWEVER...ANY
BIT OF SUN WILL BOOST TEMPS UP INTO THE 80S GIVEN VERY WARM COLUMN.
IF WE CAN REALIZE 500-1000 J/KG OF MLCAPE AT SOME POINT
THURSDAY...TORNADOES WILL BE POSSIBLE GIVEN DISCRETE CELLS GIVEN THE
STRONG LL SHEAR AND LOW LCL HEIGHTS. JUST LOOK AT THE HISTORY WITH
FRANCES. THE SPC HAS BEEN ISSUING TOR BOXES FOR 100 STRAIGHT HOURS
WITH THIS SYSTEM. AND...IF WE SEE INSTAB DVLP THURS...THEN WE VERY
WELL COULD BE PART OF THE SHOW. TIMING IS ALL DAY...NOT JUST THE
AFTERNOON AS SHEAR WILL BE STRONGEST IN THE MORNING.

On my return from Abaco, I'll post other relief efforts or needs. There are often dogs ("potcakes" - which make wonderfu, loyal pets) needing homes and books, computers for schools, etc. Have not yet heard of such needs yet.

Frances rescue efforts are a joke.God alone knows where FEMA is.I have power but no telephone.Way to go Bellsouth.
