Lyons and the TWC

This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

Lyons and the TWC

#1 Postby QueenBee » Tue Sep 14, 2004 5:56 pm

He just pointed to Louisiana and called it Mississippi. Lyons also said that the storm was heading to the mouth of the Mississippi River and that it is going to take a sharp turn to the right. How is the storm going to make a sharp turn to the right? I mean the system that is supposed to move it does not look very strong.

As a little kid, I got fascinated by hurricanes thanks to Hope and TWC coverage. Now, it just isn't the same.

I totally agree. I do not believe in bashing any professionals on this board because they know so much more than I do but I just choose not to rely on TWC in times like these.

I tell you what I REALLY don't like that I just saw on TWC. They showed a potential path of Ivan and their cone only extended to maybe 30-50 miles EAST of NOLA! That is just plain irresponsible when they do not provide a disclaimer that their path map is not an official product. Who knows how many thousands in the NOLA metro area look at that graphic and think they are in the clear? Stupid, stupid, stupid.

The hurricane force winds are forecast to extend 90 miles east and west of the eye at landfall. How can TWC exclude NOLA based upon that information? They are playing fast and loose with their editorial content, and apparently aren't all that concerned about the potential lives that could be lost to those who actually rely on them (wrongly) for accurate information.

usually the west side of storms does not have as strong winds so that is why the winds don't extend as far west as they do east.

As for you, it is surprising how fragile these tropical systems are. Just the slightest imperfection or nudge and it could fall apart or make a quick turn.

I live in Myrtle Beach, SC and over the last ten years we have had a number of storms that seemed to be coming right at us only to make a "sharp right" into NC. Strong hurricanes can turn very quickly. Look at Floyds track.

Exactly what is the difference between an experienced meteorologist and just a "general" one. On TWC, it is always announced that they have "experienced" ones, as if someone else doesn't?? Someone please explain???
