An earthquake of that magnitude close to Manila would be not good. In 1968, one of that magnitude close to Manila resulting in the collapse of a large apartment building killing many people. A larger shock in north Central Luzon (centered near Cabanatuan City) resulted in the collapse of a major chain Hotel in Baguio City as well as a school in Cabanatuan. Although, construction codes exist in the Philippines, they are rarely followed.

According to the Philippine based site I get my news about the Philippines from, the epicenter was 67 km SW of Tagaytay City at a depth of over 90km. This is far enough from Manila proper that while it would have been felt by everyone, it would not have been destructive in the Metro Manila area. So far no major damage or casualties have been reported.

So far, only one building is reported to have sustained any damage in Manila and there are still no reports of major damage or fatalities close to the epicenter. The shock in Manila was strong enough to rattle nerves but not serious enough to cause widespread damage according to PHILVOCS.
