Correction to an earlier error regarding December hurricanes

#1 Postby Stormsfury » Tue Nov 30, 2004 8:19 pm

Turns out after further research, Hurricane Nicole in 1998 was the last storm that was still a hurricane going into December, remaining a hurricane for only 12 hours (by UTC standards) ...

But for the record, still only 3 December forming hurricanes .... Storm #18 of 1887, Alice2 in 1954-1955 (only storm living in two calendar years), and Lili in 1984 ...

Peter came oh so close in 2003 ...

I think Peter reached hurricane status even though it was not acknowledged by the Hurricane Center.

If only for a brief time, Peter was a Hurricane, IMO.

That quote still lingers in memory... NHC: "Peter may have been a Hurricane earlier today"...

That and the fact that Peter was a Subtropical System for several days before it became a TS... made me cringe... NHC, do your job.

that's a debate that could last a lifetime ... and in my own opinion, I also inclined to say that I believed it had as well (and was reflected with the possibilities in my 2004 preliminary forecast back in December 2003 on my website, which still remains there) ... In the next 2 weeks or so, I will move that to another link (archived link) to make room for the 2005 preliminary release ...

Many systems the nhc doe's not upgrade because they are only subtropical systems this time of year.(It takes the nhc a few days to wake up this time of year)

That, at least for me is very annoying. They choose to define storms...subtropical & tropical and they chose to name the subtropical ones...but when they form, they don't want to acknowledge them.

I agree *Chris*, the NHC is jumping too late on systems making the transition from non-tropical to semitropical, or to fully tropical. But after all, the NHC is the boss in this business.

Actually, many of these non-threatening to land masses wouldn't even show up on public advisories, only to appear on best track analysis later ... however, high seas forecasts and marine interests would get the scoop (especially before the advantage of the internet, etc., etc., etc.,) ...
