Pea Soup Fog

#1 Postby Mezocyclone » Fri Jan 07, 2005 6:32 am

Ok everyone, I am going to speak of My Favorite Weather event among all others. A thick, Warm, and I mean Pea Soup Thick Fog. (though not while I am driving or flying)... It is one of the most incredible photo opportunities for the wonders that spider webs create in a flash with all the moisture that clings to them during heavy Foggy mornings.

Now I know of the climactic circumstances that have to ocurr for a soup to develop, but there is one missing ingrediant in my understanding that has created it this morning. Over the last several days the Humidity/Dew Point/Temperature have all been in line with the status being 100%/60°/60°, repectively. So,,,, Today is the first time the Fog has developed in more than a year, to this extent, what has been missing in all the previous mornings, that has created the Soup Today. Is there another variable that I am unaware of that makes Fog happen?

Stability is a good thing to have if you want fog. A big dome of high pressure with very light winds (or calm winds) normally helps with the formation of fog.

A lack of clouds aloft also help get the radiation process going to get that dense fog.

Thank you so much Señor, indeed those two factors have been evident during this event. Does ground temp or coastal water temps play a part in this as well? It seems that the Gulf of Mexico's minor warm up to DP temps have played a role too. I work and live between 4 and 7 miles from the West Coastline and it sure seems to have had an influence.

Thanks again for the info,,,

We've had fog quite a bit over the past few weeks because of the heat wave we've had(Highs near 70 everyday, Lows well above freezing every morning), but that's come to an end now. Just went outside to check the rain guage and let's just say I'm wide awake now.

Well the Foggy mornings have passed on for now and the front has passed through. Not many breaks in the clouds yet but it seems to be clear sailing for about a week or so.

As the Fog left the Tampa Bay area a couple of days ago I noticed that it had moved to our North. It sure isn't a condition that I enjoy driving in though. Thanks for your reports there Folks. I would love to hear more stories about anymore development of the Soupy stuff  8-)
