Another east coast snowstorm this weekend?

#1 Postby krysof » Mon Jan 24, 2005 3:33 pm

There's is the potential for another east coast snowstorm. An area of low pressure in the gulf of mexico could ride up the coast and with cold air damming in the south and the snowpack in the northeast, it could be another full fledged snowstorm with more frozen precipitation south. This could be a true nor'easter. These are the storms that have a lot of potential and have to be watched. If the storm were to bomb in the gulf. It would be stronger than this past storm and forcing heavier snows from the south to northeast. Something to watch?

I had just noticed that myself. Per the 12utc GFS model, we'd need temps to come down across the MA and NE by a few degrees, but the potential is there. :slime:

I don't think the models relize the snowpack the northeast has gotten and that's why they have those higher temperatures. The potential is definetelly there. It's been a wild winter just like the almanac predicted and February could have a nor'easter pattern.

models dont do well with snowpack..cut the models by 3-5 degrees and you will have reality. we made it to 67 in fort laud but it was tough...temps declining now

yeah but you don't have snowpack and so you mean that if I drop temps about 3-5 because of snowpack, that's what it will be, not what the models are saying.

Not impressed. They want to "try" and make some overrunning/damming, but as you can see on the European, the system is paltry and further south. What is real key is the arctic air spilling back into the Plains and the low that will probably develope over the Gulf. But that is far away yet if it would happen.

It's a bit a hard to say this far out. But assuming the snowpack lingers into next weekend, you can cut the temperatures at the surface by over 5 degrees from what the models indicate. Tendencies have shown that models don't handle surface temps as well in areas that have snowpack. But will see how things shape up.

What are the possibilities for snow with this in northern VA? I know right now, my local mets have changed their rain/snow forecast to all rain with highs in the 40's.

Do you already have snowpack? The wacky gfs doesn't even show it much, though it does have colder air at that time. If other models are consistent than the gfs models will follow the other models if this potential storm is 3-4 days away.

This potential storm is not that impressive looking for all of the Carolinas at all! Just saw news and they said temps in upper 40's and low in low 30's. Where i live we will get nothing but rain looks like, this truly sucks! I just wish for once we got some snow this winter, but i don't think that'll happen this winter! El Nino did a number on us this time, everywhere else but us in the South seems like.

I'm just so sick and tired of sending you northerners moisture from the gom for your snow! Enough is enough! Isn't it time you shared some of your snow with us?

What's Stormsfury got to say about all this as of the most recent model runs? I'd sure like to get his input on what he think is evolving so far. Looks like all rain for us in Columbia,Good Luck everyone else!

its still a good week away, anything can happen. Just look at the blizzard we had. Models had no idea it would be that severe especially for cape cod.

I don't want this storm to effect us, especially this early after the blizzard. Accuweather shows the potential for ice or snow, depending on the temperatures for my area, it will all depend on the strength of the high pressure, the track of the low and the intensity. Here we have 16 inches and high 6-8 foot mountains of snow already shoveled. Any more significant snows this early is just trouble. Not much snow will melt until the weekend. It is likely to get above freezing for Wednesday and possibly reaching 32 degrees for tomorrow but 30 seems more reasonably with the snowpack and about 32-34 on Wednesday before we drop into the teens for highs and on Friday morning, the coldest night yet is forecast for our area. Temperatures will be near or at 0 degrees.

Should we send it UPS or FedEx? We've plenty to spare! And no place to put it, so your yard sounds good...

Persepone, I believe a couple of years ago, Minnesota trucked in snow from Buffalo for a winter carnival!
