Right now I look at this as being a situation that has great potential, but some things have to go right. The last time was a heartbreaker for sure.

I sure did, I had only been up for 5mins, and was getting ready for work. I heard a thud sound (very similar but not as loud as the mid 1990's quake), and I felt a very quick vibration! I though to myself, I wonder if I will be hearing about an earthquake on the news today.......Well sure enough, here it is..........

3.0 quake under Whidbey Island

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

OAK HARBOR, Wash. -- A small earthquake under south Whidbey Island was widely felt Thursday morning from Mount Vernon to north Seattle.

A spokesman for University of Washington geophysics, Bill Steele, said there were no reports of damage. He said the magnitude 3.0 quake was widely felt because of its depth -19 miles - and the time - 6:08 a.m. - when people were waking up.

People calling TV and radio stations reported beds shook, mirrors rattled, and some heard a "thunk" or what they thought was the wind.

Steele said the quake occurred on the south Whidbey Island fault, which is capable of a major quake, but has been quiet lately.



The quake in the mid '90's (I think it was spring of 1996) I was in bed watching the start of "Seinfield" when I heard what sounded like a freight train in the distance, and it kept getting louder and louder.......Then silence for about 2 seconds. Then my bed started to rotate back and fourth like someone was pushing on it in a circular motion, that freaked me out, and I hoped out of bed, just then came the "Thuds" and the floor seemed like it went up and down twice, I was in the doorway at that point, and knew what it was. Needless to say I couldn't sleep that night!
The one in 2001 I was out mowing fairways, so I never felt it, but the machanic at the shop of the golf course said he thought the building was coming down! My neighbors at the lake lost there retaining wall do to the quake.


I think we all forget where we live sometimes and forget the potential for a bad quake, or any quake for that matter.

There was also two other earthquakes today, one at Granite Falls I believe and one on the north end of Vancouver Island in B.C.

That was one whimpy earthquake this morning. I got up for school around 5:45am and was just getting out of the shower when all the sudden the mirrors in the bathroom began shaking...but nothing big. Earthquake came to mind pretty quickly. A minute later, my dad told me there was a 3.0 quake centered around Whidbey Island. Nothing big, but at least it was something.

The February 2001 earthquake wasn't too big up here in Mukilteo. We felt it, but it did little damage compared to some areas on Seattle and Tacoma.

I think the biggest quake I've experienced was in May of 1995...it was 9pm at night and I was laying on the floor in my room, watching tv. All the sudden, I heard a big boom and my door starting shaking rapidly. That lasted for two seconds, and I got up, opened the door and all the sudden the floor and walls started swaying back and forth...my mom was screaming, my dad was running up the stairs and I was under the door frame. That was exciting!!! We had minor damage from that quake...my tv in my room fell over, a few pictures downstairs fell off the walls and we had a few cracks in the ceiling. I can understand because the epicenter was located in Duvall...which is fairly close to Mukilteo. Add that to a very shallow depth, and you have quite a quake!!

Well... the 00Z run of the ETA looks much drier after tomorrow night.

Definitely a good shot of rain (mountain snow) tomorrow. Lingering showers on Saturday with some sun breaks close to the Puget Sound. Then a very weak surface low moves into Oregon on Sunday. The ETA is totally dry during the day Sunday but there will probably be a few showers and a few sun breaks and most places should make it past 40 degrees. It looks like California gets the most precipitation with the Sunday system.

A cool night on Sunday night... close to normal in the low 30's. Maybe some upper 20's if skies clear. Radiational cooling... NOT (I repeat NOT) an arctic blast.

Monday should be clear and cool... sunglasses and sweaters as Walter Kelley like to say on Q13. Should be a spectacular day though with new snow in the mountains to look at with the clear skies.

Ah 1995, I was one yr off. Wow we sure had a good stretch of exciting stuff in the mid 1990's!

That was by far the largest quake I have been in yet! I was just waiting for aftershocks all that night, never happened though.

I remember the Mariners were playing in the Kingdome, they suspended the game for the night. NOW that would have been scary being in that concrete bubble during that quake

Never mind the ECMWF and several GFS runs have shown that we WILL get low level Arctic air in here this weekend. I will be laughing when some places get snow and we have lows well below freezing. That's it...I am not going to let you ruin another evening of mine.

I do remember one aftershock after that event...the earthquake was on a Thursday night...there was a 3.6 aftershock on Saturday morning. That was an interesting aftershock because it was like a wave went through my room...it didn't sway back in forth...instead it just swayed in one direction...and it lasted maybe 1-2 seconds. In any event, it was awesome!!

Tell me WHY you would take my post PERSONALLY. WHY????? It was not even directed at you.

You are one obsessed guy. Too obsessed to be objective.

I have changed my prediction. The 00Z run of the ETA shows 12-22 inches of snow in Seattle on Sunday. I would expect Bellingham to have 30+ inches.

The winner will be Covington with 60-70 inches. The pattern looks perfect to hit Covington.

It will then be around -10 degrees Sunday night and Monday night. Highs will struggle to reach zero.

Ready to see the map that shows us getting clobbered??? Here it is... the map showing predicted precipitation for the 12 hour period during the day on Sunday...




All I can say is WOW. Look closely at the Seattle area. Pretty amazing.


Sarcasm aside... I said REPEATEDLY that the snow levels will be LOW and temperatures will go below freezing on Sunday night.

Why would you be laughing when I say the same thing. Some places will get snow (above 1,000 feet) and it will go below freezing.

I didn't feel that aftershock, but you were much closer to the epicenter then I was. I remember just waiting for one to happen, for some strange reason I really wanted to feel another quake.
AS long as its a small to moderate quake, I never want to feel or be a part of "THE BIG ONE" Not a matter of "if" but a matter of "WHEN"

Yeah I will look for the tape, if I find it, I will also throw in the Feb 2001 snowstorm coverage I found and send it to you.
I also have coverage of the big San Fransisco quake of 1989, I started taping just a few minutes after the quake.
I also found hurricane HUGO coverage, as well as some other hurricanes like "Bonnie"

Imagine that if during the first week of January... as the -4 PNA pattern was setting up and Snow_Wizzard was convinced that 1950 was upon us again... someone told him it was going to be in the 60's by the third week of January and people would be mowing lawns. To Snowwizards defense, almost everyone including NWS and myself thought we were going to be digging out. It was the models that really screwed us over getting our hopes up on that storm.

I think you both are great, and it wouldn't be the same here without either of you. Snowwiz has a TON of knowlage of the history of Western WA climate, and TT knows his models, and enjoys all weather, even this boring stuff we are in

The thing that is upsetting is TT is assuming I am wrong and he doesn't know yet. Time will tell won't it. I have always been obsessed and I have outpredicted the NWS many times. Remember Nov 19996. I called that one perfectly. It is insulting to be accused of not being objective before the thing has even happened. The ETA is only one model for god's sake.
