"typical"ENSO evolution ?????
just a question for the board
....my interest in the ENSO cycle was first piqued in the late 80s...have been following it since that time. have noted the extended warm episode of 1991-94, the cool episodes of 1996,1998-1999, the very warm episode of 1997and subsequent warming in 2002. .....i thought i understood the evolution of the warm and cool phases. what has me puzzled is the "static" situation of the last 6-8 months...typically, the warming begins in areas 3 and 4 and evolves eastward to areas 1 and 2. to date, this hasnt occurred. can a cool episode begin prior to the "completion" of the warming of areas 1 and 2? .....secondly, with this dichotomy between west and east temps, will global effects resemble that of a warm or cool episode?....sorry about the length of the post .....will appreciate any input.......rich
