Faithful see Virgin Mary in underpass stain

#1 Postby Miss Mary » Wed Apr 20, 2005 6:32 am

I first saw this story on Yahoo, with a series of pictures you could click on. It sure looks like Mother Mary to me! Anyone live in Chicago here?

Some see Virgin Mary in underpass stain

http://www.cnn.com/2005/US/04/20/mary.u ... index.html

CHICAGO, Illinois (AP) -- A steady stream of the faithful and the curious have flocked to a Chicago freeway underpass to view a stain on a concrete wall that some believe is an image of the Virgin Mary.

One woman said, "We believe it's a miracle. We have faith, and we can see her face."

Chicago Police have patrolled the emergency turnoff area under the Kennedy Expressway since Monday as hundreds of people have walked down to see the image and the flowers and candles that surround it.

Beside the image is an artist's rendering of the Virgin Mary embracing Pope John Paul II in a pose that some see as echoed in the stain.

The Illinois Department of Transportation says the stain is likely the result of salt run-off, but doesn't plan to scrub it off the wall.

These types of stories are very funny, almost as good as the one found in a tortilla. If the "virgin mary" were to present herself, I think she could do better than a concerte stain under an overpass.

PS: I once saw a cloud that looked just like a crab! It was very exciting.

As a former Chicagoan, yes, I'm familiar with the Kennedy Expressway and its "underground" (BTW, locals don't call them "freeways").

As a God-fearing woman raised an RC, not to be disrespectful ... but when I saw the video clip on tv last night , I was amazed at the message of hope the Virgin brings: next to her image in bold, clearly readable letters are the words

"GO CUBS!"

  :D

DeeBee - ROTFL!!!! Missed that Go Cubs part......ah, she roots for the underdogs I see (we do too!).

Is this area in a bad part of town? I'm just curious. We have relatives living in Barrington and when we drive past the South Side of Chicago, I always remember their words of caution - make sure you have a full tank of gas before you enter this area. You don't want to exit to fill up. Best to continue on, even in major traffic jams.

Mary, the Fullerton and I-90 area is older and multi-cultural. It's about 2 miles west of Wrigley Field (home of the Cubbies).

Yes, the due West and South Sides of Chicago can be daunting. They contain some of the most economically depressed neighborhoods in the city. My relatives on my mom's side lived on the Southwest Side and driving there via the Eisenhower Expressway from the west suburbs could be quite an adventure, particularly in the hot (in more ways than just the weather) days/nights of the mid-60s.

Barrington is a nice area. When I was young, it was practically the edge-of -the-universe boondocks before the area "grew up." Do you travel there often?

We have a concrete wall on the side of a building here at UTMB with a face on it. It's a well-known urban legend/ghost story here in Galveston. A woman (a nurse, I believe) actually died when she went to see "The Face." She accidentally back up off a dock and her car plunged into the water. The seatbelt latch wouldn't release and she drowned. (True story...I've checked. :) Her family sued Honda and won $65,000,000 from the wrongful death verdict. It was the largest such verdict for product liability ever awarded in Galveston and the second largest in Texas.)

Maybe the Illinois DOT will auction off the Kennedy Expressway on eBay.

Now some inconsiderate doof has come along and vandalized the image.

I don't see a picture of the grafitti here, but I saw it on the news today. What I noticed was that besides saying "Big Lie," the I and E in "Lie" were shaped like a swastika. And I know Nazis used the term "big lie." So, I'm guessing it was some white supremacist who did it.

I'm a bit hungover this morning having consumed the better part of a bottle of wine last night. I can blame the hangover for thinking the title of the thread referred to an "Underpants Stain"......

Guaranteed hangover prevention (courtesy of the ER) - drink a really tall glass of water (or 2, if you can) and take TWO multi-vitamins before you go to bed after drinking. Alcohol depletes your body of nutrients and dehydrates you, which causes the hungover feeling. Taking the preventive measures will help you rise and shine the next morning as if you'd slept soberly all night.

You CAN take the vitamins and water the morning after also, but it takes a little while to take effect. I've seen many buddies rejuvenated by noon. :)

*shakes head at your misreading*

I'm shaking my head at myself too Duckie. I'm sure there's something Freudian in that but I don't think I want to know what it is.

I usually hit the vitamins and Advil before I go to bed, but in this case I was too far gone so I did it when I got up at 5:00 this morning. Starting to feel almost human by now. Aaaaaaahhhhhh!

The dude's name is apparently Victor Gonzalez...not sure if he's white, but that sure does look like a swastika.

Underpants or Underpass...either one. I think it is a vision of Leno, not the Virgin Mary.
