Brush Fire North Of My Home...

#1 Postby azskyman » Fri May 13, 2005 8:47 am

Although the smoke is choking a few thousand residents at the moment in north Scottsdale (including our neighborhood) and Carefree, Arizona, the brush fire that is burning north of us near Bartlett Lake is not an immediate threat. I will keep you posted if that changes.

On the way to work and out of that smoke, I could see yet another brush fire plume some 30 miles north of town or so.

With temperatures flirting with 100 degrees this weekend, and humidity in the single digits, firefighters know that this will be a busy summer.

In fact, the city of Phoenix ALONE...is predicting up to 1000 brush fires WITHIN THE CITY LIMITS this spring and summer.

That 10" of rain between Thanksgiving and Easter gave us a lot of green for a while. That has since turned tinder dry and has gone from being beautiful flowers to being volatile fuel.

Wish us luck here in Arizona this spring and summer.

You know we'll all be praying for a relatively "calm" summer for all of you out there in the West, Steve!

Oh no Steve! After all of your hard work on your home and lawn/landscaping. At least you went with rocks mostly, huh?

Please keep us updated and hopefully this will be contained. 1000 fires expected sounds excessive.

Jim was in Vegas last week on business. I asked him if there were any signs in his hotel room about curtailing shower/water usage. Not expecting towels/bedding to be changed daily. He said no, not a thing. He also said you wouldn't even know there's a severe water shortage out there, b/c of all the plentiful water - pools, fountains, waterfalls, in resorts, etc.

Somehow I wasn't surprised. Can you imagine the amount of water these Vegas hotels go thru? Especially when you're in a severe draught too.

No harm done here today...but a third brushfire was visible on the southeastern horizon on the way home from work. The early morning blaze was some 1200 acres before it was quieted down.

All's quiet tonight locally...but temps to 97 tomorrow.

Just so you know not to worry...we live in an established neighborhood. No brush within about 1 1/2 miles from us. Grass, pavement, and plenty of rock...including my yard, Mary!

And if those rocks start burning? We have bigger problems than a brush fire here!

Glad all's quiet for now Steve. If those rocks do start burning, you're in trouble! Aren't you glad you went with rocks now? You're not stupid......
