Hurricane Edith
Does anyone remember Edith of 1971? She crossed over the Yucatan and grazed Mexico then took a sharp turn towards Louisiana making landfall around Vermillion Bay. It once had winds of 160! Made landfall in LA with winds of 100 mph and hurricane force winds were felt all the way up to Baton Rouge. I was not born for Edith, but read about it on wunderground.com. I found it interesting and her track was interesting as well.

I remember Edith. I grew up in BR. I don't think on our side of town (northeast) it was too bad. I was only in Kindergarten at the time, but it was the first hurricane I ever experienced. It started my interest in storms. I do remember watching the trees swaying and our old wooden basketball goal falling, Dad using his kerosene lamp (indoors!-how safe is that?!) If Edith had kept those 160mph winds when she hit LA it would have been a catastophe. Coming from that angle, BR would have gotten hammered, not to mention all points south!

Strangely enough, this one must not have hit the Baton Rouge area too hard - although I was on an flight Monday with a man who now lives in St. Louis and was in Plaquemine that year. He remembered this storm vividly and I was shcoked that I didn't. I was in the 8th or 9th grade then, so if it would have been of significance to our area, I'm positive I would have remember that.
