Re: 2018 ACE: NATL - EPAC - WPAC - 8.8 - NIO - SHEM - 170.3
WPAC is almost 4 units above average for March 30th as Typhoon JELAWAT spiked the ACE but wont get a lot more as it weakens. SHEM is 10 units behind the normal average.

This is the first time the WPac has been above average ACE at any point since the end of the 2015 Pacific Typhoon Season.

My personal calculations now have WPac ACE at 10.045 as of 00Z March 31st. Last year, it took until the end of July 23rd for the WPac to cross 10 units of ACE.

I had the understanding that ACE didn't count for subtropical storms. Did the definition change? Or are Maue's and Klotzbach's automated scripts not calculating this correctly.

Well it reached 65 mph and with TS force winds so...that seems about right.
Though, I'm skeptical of them counting subtropical systems as ACE now. They aren't fully tropical (it can be debated Alberto is tropical).

It appears that you are correct. AOML/NHC says ACE is calculated for named storms which they define as STS, TS, and HUs. That seems like a recent change to the definition but maybe I'm just losing my mind.

Since when do Subtropical Storms account for ACE?

Here is confirmation:
http://www.aoml.noaa.gov/hrd/tcfaq/E11.html
Named Storms = Tropical Storms, Hurricanes and Subtropical Storms
Hurricanes = Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale 1 to 5
Major Hurricanes = Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale 3, 4, or 5
"ACE" = Accumulated Cyclone Energy - An index that combines the numbers of systems, how long they existed and how intense they became. It is calculated by squaring the maximum sustained surface wind in the system every six hours that the cyclone is a Named Storm and summing it up for the season. It is expressed in 104 kt2.

It changed recently. Subtropical storms don't count for ACE not too long ago.
Wow so now the Atlantic is counting these and other basins don't? Because they have recon?...

I thought subtropical storms are counted in all basins now. It's just they're more common in the Atlantic

Subtropical storms aren't counted for the other basins for some reason. JTWC nor JMA doesn't even count these for the world's most active basin. It's weird. More common in the Atlantic? Nope...It's just ignored as they aren't tropical...Not just here but worldwide.
