Wow, the first final report. Arlene will always be memorable for me because it was the first tropical system that I experienced while at sea, and it was quite exciting.

Yeah, that's an experience all right. I got caught in TS Chris while sailing singlehanded in the Bahamas back in '88. Not a real strong storm, thank God, but that was a really intense experience.

Yes tropical storms seem much stronger while over the ocean. Probably due to the ships forward motion and all. The winds experienced on the ship were quite comparable to Frances IMO.

Cool:
The highest winds observations over land were provided by Mark Sudduth and Weatherflow, Inc.
Go Mark, lol

Mistake?

#7 Postby hurricanetrack » Sat Oct 15, 2005 7:56 pm

Read this from the Arlene write-up from the NHC:

Acknowledgments
NWS/WFOs in Newport, Wilmington, Charleston, and Wakefield contributed many of the observations contained in this report. The highest winds observations over land were provided by Mark Sudduth and Weatherflow, Inc.

I think this is a mistake- none of those WFOs are in Florida where Arlene hit. This is probably an artifact leftover from the Alex write-up from 2004 when I did have the highest winds reported over land- along with the company Weatherflow, Inc.

Arlene seems like almost an ancient storm now. She was pretty exciting when she happened, though...Pensacola was directly impacted by Arlene only 9 months after Hurricane Ivan, so a lot of blue tarps were still up.
