A game of scruples...or whatever we decide to call it

#1 Postby GalvestonDuck » Fri Jul 09, 2004 5:37 pm

Okay, Mary -- how's this for a topic/conversation starter? Has anyone else here ever played Scruples or read from the Book Of Questions at a party or get-together?

I thought I was going to come home and find my game, but it's been years since I've played and I just can't figure out where it is. At first, I thought maybe we could start with one person asking another person a question. But then I realized some people might not always make it back here to answer (not everyone logs on regularly) if asked directly.

So why not have one person post the first question/situation and then the next person can answer it. After they've answered, they can ask a question. The only problem I see arising is if two people come in after a question and answer at the same time and then ask two NEW questions at the same time. Not sure how this will work. Who knows, maybe we can just start new threads with each question/situation.

Of course, in the game of Scruples, people have to decide whether or not you're being honest. Let's not bother doing that here. If you don't want to answer honestly or as openly as you feel comfortable, just don't answer. Simple as that. :)

Basically, the questions are pose some type of dilemma. For example: Would you shave your head completely and remain bald for the rest of your life if someone paid you $1,000,000? If you knew your best friend's spouse was having an affair, would you tell your best friend? If you knew your best friend was having an affair, would you tell his/her spouse? If killing yourself could absolutely bring about world peace, would you do it? (Sounds like an al-Qaeda question)

Anyway, those are the basic types of questions -- from minor quirky stuff like shaving your head or eating a worm to serious moral dilemmas. Generally, they're all YES or NO answers and there is no right or wrong answer (even though people won't always agree).

How 'bout it?

I'll start --
If you were trapped on a secluded, cold mountaintop in the dead of winter with your leg pinned under a boulder, would you cut your own leg off to free yourself?

I don't think I could do it. I am a wimp. I would freeze to death. I like my legs intact. I would just pray someone would find me in time.

QUESTION:

If you were on an island with five other people: a pregnant woman, a gay man, a black girl approx. 10 y/old, a white male supremacist, and a asian woman with AIDS and suddenly came across a boat with room for only 3 people. Which three would you choose to save?

The pregnant woman, the gay man and the little black girl .... the woman with AIDS unfortunately is bound to die anyways, and Im not a big fan of KKK members :grr:

If you found out your husband/wife/significant other was involved in some serious internet flirtation/romance with someone (but they hadnt met them yet).....would you consider that cheating?

The pregnant woman because the child has a right to live, the little black girl because she is a child, and a gay man.

I would make my choices when and if the time came. We are all bound to die at one time or another ,so I guess I wouldn't use that as a deciding factor. Maybe sometimes I think too much into things but only our father has the right to choose when someones time comes. The situation and extenuating circumstances don't help me make a choice!!

If I was in a serious relationship with them (ie: married) yes.

If someone was trying to sell you something at your front door and they wouldn't leave you alone no matter how many times you said no would you threaten to shoot them if they didn't get off your property?

I guess you guys are more selfless than I. I would choose myself, the pregnant woman, and the little girl. ;)

Great idea for a new topic Shawn! :-) I like the name Scruples!

In answer to Garrett's last question, persistent salesman....

No I wouldn't shoot him/her. I have been faced with this situation though and all I have to say is if you don't get off my property, I will call the police! That always does it. They're gone in seconds.

Question (please don't ask me why this popped in my head, perhaps the recent terrorist threat did it):

If you were trapped in a burning, high rise, with no way out, would you jump, hastening your death?

You know... I don't know for sure. If I thought that I would burn to death I would, but if there was a chance that they might put the fire out before it got to me, I would not.

I would rather jump to my death than be burned alive.. It's less painful and a lot quicker..

I'm afraid that I'm unable to respond to this thread; being a Bush conservative, I MUST be "unscrupulous".

LOL, Bill! Not you!

I'd have to pick the Super Bowl. I LOOOOOOVE football!

As for the burning building -- chances are good that you'd die (or at least pass out) from smoke inhalation before you burned.

Question:
If someone offered you $10 million dollars, would you get the words "Machu Picchu" tattooed on your forehead?

Well, it's legit. I remember some kind of goofy questions like that in Scruples also. Actually, I think you had to have some word that was more severe and unpostable here.

*Unpostable -- that a word? It is now. :)

So...would ya? For 10 million smackers?

Well, I did once lose a bet in my frat house about one of the brothers getting a "DO NOT ENTER" tattooed on his @$$...does that count?

Nope. My pride costs more than that!

IF you knew your neighbor was doing drugs, yet never bothered you or anyone else in your neighborhood, would you turn them in?

No, I wouldn't. Heck, I know a couple of coworkers who do drugs (and dared to do it on the way to a get-together/party with our boss...as if the rest of us couldn't smell it when they got out of the car!).

If police are able to get to the dealers, I'm all for that. And if my neighbors were dealing, yeah...I'd turn them in as long as I knew I was anonymous on the record. But it's my understanding that getting in the way of the buyers can lead to problems brought on by the dealers if they find out who turned in the buyers.

If you were driving down the street and a child ran out in front of you, and if you swerved to the left you would hit a tree, and if you swerved to the right you would hit a puppy....what would you do?
