2004 List Has a Destructive History.

#1 Postby JtSmarts » Fri Sep 17, 2004 8:50 am

A few days ago someone said that the whole 2004 list should be retired after all that has happened this season. So I began thinking about how this list faired in the past.

Notables
1980: Destructive Cat 5 Allen
1992: Andrew
1998: Very destructive storms Mitch and Georges plus Bonnie in NC
2004: We all know what has happened this year.

Also of note every year this list has been used with the exception of 1986 has seen a Cat 5 storm. Allen, Andrew, Mitch and Ivan

what are the requirements for retirement...so much death and destruction that they don't have any clear cut case NOT to retire it? This year I'm sure at least 3 storms need retiring , if only for the sake of the hearts and minds of Floridians everywhere.

I noted this about three weeks ago at another board I go to. I'm not an expert but it does seem the rotatation and it's relacements seem more destructive than other year lists. But then again I haven't sat down and looked at every other year either.

For reference, what I posted on Sept 7 2004 (in reply to a post re comparing Allen's path in 1980 vs Ivan's up to that point)

. Allen track

1980 Allen odd note: it was in the same storm name rotation as Hurricanes Bonnie, Charley, Earl, Frances, Georges, Ivan, Jeanne and Karl.

Allen's (Cat 5) name was retired and replace by ... Andrew (Cat 5). Whose name was retired in 1992 and replaced by Alex.

Bonnie has never been a major hurricane. But did hit Texas in 1986.

Charley ought to be retired after this year.

Earl's still around.

Frances was sched for retirement before this season.

Georges was retired in 1998 (Cat 5) and replaced by Gaston, who may or may not be retired.

Ivan's played nice till now.

Jeanne (who I suspect we'll see again this week) is around.

Mitch was in that rotation and retired in 1998 (Cat 5)

This rotation was used for the first time in 1980.

Obviously, since then Ivan has done enough grief that I would assume that the name will be retired too.

I don't think it's the list itself that needs to be retired- even replacement names are turning into major disaster hurricanes.

Yikes I think I missed that one!

>Bonnie was a major hurricane in 1998 when she hit NC. I am fairly certain she almost got retired.

>Georges was not a category 5. Georges only had max winds of 130 KT (150 MPH)
