News and updates on winter storm....6 PM EST 11-23-03
Good evening everyone. Some pretty big affects from this winter storm, even though it was a relatively modest, but strong winter storm for Minnesota standards. It was still the first winter storm of the season and problems galore. 123 reported accidents in Minnesota due to the weather with 1 fatality unfortunately.
Snow amounts ranged from 4.8 inches in Duluth, Minnesota to 3-6 inches in Minnepolis. Snow continues to fall hard in Duluth and light snow is falling in Minnepolis. Snow should taper off in Minneapolis later tonight. Snow should taper off in Duluth by early Monday morning. However lake effect snows are likely in Minnesotas arrowhead and the UP of Michigan.
Total snow accumulations for Minnepolis will likely range from 6-8 inches with local amounts north and west of Minnepolis up to 10 inches. However strong winds will cause blowing and drifting snow and snow drifts of 2-4 feet. In Duluth, Minnesota snowfall amounts will range from 8-16 inches with the highest amounts in the lake effect and lake enhanced favored areas. Due to the rapid movement of this storm system, snowfall amounts were lowered slightly. However this is still a significant winter storm with near blizzard conditions, especially west and northwest of Minnepolis and across south central Minnesota as well.
In addition a huge temperature contrast continues. In Houston, temperatures have dropped from the mid 70s down into the 50s in a short period of time courtesy of a vigorous frontal passage. Dallas never got out of the 40s today and they were nearly 80 degrees yesterday. An amazing 30-35 degrees drop in temperatures in a 24 hour period in Dallas. At one point this afternoon, there was a 38 degree temperature contrast from one city to the next. Kansas City was 31 while St Louis was 69 early this afternoon. A huge difference on either side of the front. The colder air will win out for the next several days for most of the United States with at or slightly below normal readings. Certainly a real taste that the holidays are approaching.
Another update later this evening on this winter storm. Again 123 accidents in Minnesota, 1 person dead. Stay tuned.
