The only difficult part of the forecast for me has been the timing issue. That appears resloved now and expect the arctic cold to start overwhelming the pattern this weekend in the north and then south and east next week.

First off... the ridge setting up this week is a very flat ridge and it's not even in the east. It's across the GOM. It is a more zonal flow than anything setting up this week. Even then... expect some cold air to sweep from the lakes into the NE before the big chill comes down from Canada.

Major overrruning events are likely starting next week and the following weeks. This could give folks at a low latitude some nice rounds of very wintry weather.

There is also a good chance that the GOA low locks in for a while late next week and the following weeks. This would promote a +PNA and perhaps lock in some bitterly cold air across the states.

So... I think it's high time to stop questioning whether the cold will come... it will. We should now focus on how cold it will be and where and will it lock in? Those a re the ONLY questions we are now faced with.

Your exactly right Upslope....

EC shows the zonal flow starting by Thurs

by Fri the cold air starts to make its move

There will be gradual transition to seasonal temps then maybe colder than norm temps...

Looks like another week or so of temps at or above normal in my area. Hoping for some colder weather next week.

MJO timing plus strong easteley QBO

#7 Postby weatherfan » Mon Dec 29, 2003 7:14 pm

I think upslope HM hit the nail on the head on the other board. That the timing of the MJO periods have been off.And with the Strong easterley QBO its been the Strong Pj as of late. Now that the MJO is going to be weaking for this cycle. We may see a cold periold set up in the Januarey 10-20 time frame. And then after that the MJO next wet pase may start to kick in.So this wnter upslope is diffentey going to be one I beleave to be remember buy its varabiteys and diffacultey of the long range forecastings this year.
