Wow - wide variety of NYC TV forecasts

#1 Postby RU848789 » Mon Jan 26, 2004 11:21 pm

Just watched 5 of the 6 major TV stations in the NYC area (missed Ch 9)and here's what they predicted, in general (impossible to get all the details without access to their maps). Here goes:

Channel 5: just has a general swath of 6-12" across the entire area (NNJ/CNJ/NYC/LI/Hudson Valley and CT), decreasing to 3-6" on a line roughly from Belmar (Monmouth Co) across to Philly.

Channel 11: had 12-16" area N and W of NYC (the usual areas) and into CT, then a 6-12" area for most of NENJ, CNJ, LI, decreasing to a 3-6" swath in what looked to be Ocean County across to Newark DE.

Channel 2: had only an 8-12" swath N and W of NYC (the usual areas) and into CT, noting that this was just downgraded (maybe watching Kocin, lol), then a general 4-8" area for most of NENJ, CNJ, LI, decreasing to a 3-6" swath in what looked to be southern Monmouth County (didn't catch where the line crossed to in the west).

Channel 4: listed a 12"+ area just N and W of NYC (the usual areas) and into CT, then a 6-12" area for most of NENJ, CNJ, LI, decreasing to a 3-6" swath from Ocean County across to Newark DE.

Channel 7: Sam Champion was the champion of the snow lovers, forecasting 12-18" just N and W of NYC (the usual areas) and into CT, then a 6-12" area for NYC, CNJ, LI and the rest of NJ at least down to LBI.

Not sure what to make of this, but for NYC and me (all the forecasts had northern Middlesex County, where I live, in the same swath as NYC, which is usually the case), the predictions range from a low of 4-8" to a high of about 12", as Channel 7's line seperating 12-18" from 6-12" looked to run from the Bronx across to about Somerville, NJ, which is within a few miles of Manhattan and us. If I simply took the average, we'd likely see 6-10" snow, which is exactly what the NWS is predicting for Mercer across to Middlesex Counties and all NJ counties to the N and W, plus the same for NYC and LI. I can live with 6-10", although I'll still hope for more.
