Snow Cancels Flights and Closes Schools
8AM EST, January 28, 2004
Residents in the major metro areas
from Washington DC to Providence
have felt the wrath of winter once again
as a coastal low pressure system has
dropped snow once again in the
Northeast.
Snowfall from the system has ranged
from 1-2" around Washington and
Baltimore to 4-8" from Philadelphia to
Providence. Lesser amounts have
fallen in the interior areas of the
Northeast.
The snow, which began to develop
during rush hour on Tuesday in
Washington and Baltimore, became
more widespread and heavy as it
spread northeast toward southern New
England on Tuesday Night.
The snow cancelled flights and left
travelers stranded from Washington DC
through New York. Many airlines were
playing catch-up with flight plans on
Wednesday morning.
The snow also cancelled schools once
again in the DC and Baltimore areas.
For some districts, it was the third
straight day without school. Shouts of
joy due to cancelled school rang out
through much of the Northeast coastal
regions as the snow iced roadways
making school travel hazardous.
The heaviest snow was seen in a stripe
from central New Jersey, through New
York City and Long Island and across
southern Connecticut. These areas saw
snowfall in the range of 5-9".
The storm took a slightly more
southerly track than anticipated
Tuesday and this has left Boston and
Providence and eastern Massachusetts
wondering where the one-foot of
forecasted snow actually fell. Winter
storm warnings were cancelled for
eastern New England as the storm
never materialized.
The storm was beginning to slide
eastward this morning and snow was
tapering off in New York City. The
remainder of southern New England will
see snow throughout the morning
slowly diminish.
Behind the storm, cold winds will begin
to pick up as colder air flows into the
region. This will cause temperatures to
have difficulty rising today, and with
high winds, wind chill temperatures will
fall into the single digits over most of
the Northeast.
Early on Wednesday, winds had gusted
as high as 46 mph at a WeatherBug
live sensor in Frostburg, Maryland
sending the wind chill down to 5 below
zero.
