Frozen Delaware Bay/Coastal Winter pics

#1 Postby SeNJWx » Sat Jan 31, 2004 12:56 pm

Took these yesterday and the day before. I was really surprised at the amount of ice down there... even as far south as Sunset Beach and the Concrete Ship. Temps were in the Mid-Upper 20's, Winds about 20-30+ Mph. Also have some pics from Ocean City.

Enjoy.

Great pics! It is something to see the bay with ice. We've been having temps though comparable to areas way to the north of us for so long, so it's understandable.

Chesapeake Bay is much the same. They have to bring ice cutters out into the bay to keep shipping traffic flowing on a daily basis from Norfolk to Baltimore or from Baltimore to C&D Canal and Delaware Bay.

Ice is over 1 foot thick on Chesapeake Bay, especially north of the Bay Bridge. This is the coldest January in Baltimore since 1977. We're only 1 degree from our all time coldest January ever in Baltimore. No wonder we have ice all the way down to the Bay Bridge. Even the lower eastern shore is seeing icy spots down to near Crisfield.

http://www.rap.ucar.edu/weather/satelli ... &itype=vis shows not only the snow cover with the clear skies, but the ice on Chesapeake Bay and Delaware Bay as well. It is quite a scene even from up above. I'll post pictures on the Bay freeze tomorrow.

My annual visit to sw florida, Venice.
The second coldest January visit in 20 years.
Rain all day and 59 degrees here.

I hope for an early spring. Here i have seen sunflowers in bloom, hibiscus everywhere.
At home in Alexandria, the daffidills are coming up.

Plenty of time for a big snowstorm left in this winter, tho
