Slippery Day Ahead in East

On the day following Groundhog Day it
looks like Punxsutawney Phil`s forecast
of 6 more weeks of winter is right on
track in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast.
A storm system pushing through the
Great Lakes is pulling moisture from out
of the south over some very cold air on
the surface in the Appalachians, Mid-
Atlantic and New York early on
Monday. With temperatures in the 20s
and low 30s, it is making for any icy
slippery mess.

A mixture of freezing rain, sleet and
snow was falling east of the
Appalachians from northwest North
Carolina up through the Baltimore and
Washington DC metro areas. The
winter mix was also falling through
central Pennsylvania and into western
New York.

National Weather Service forecast
offices had raised winter weather
advisories and winter storm warnings
throughout this same region. Advisories
had also been posted for a large part of
New England in anticipation of the
winter weather.

A WeatherBug live sensor in Ashburn,
Virginia, west of Washington DC was
reading 29 degrees with a steady rain
falling.

A weak low pressure system was
forming along the Carolina coast which
was helping keep the cold air trapped in
the low levels along the East Coast.
This low was forecasted to become the
more primary system as it moved up
the coast to Maine by Wednesday
morning.

Although most of the precipitation is
expected to be in the form of freezing
rain or a frozen mix, the interior areas
of northern New York and New England
should expect some snow. Snowfall
amounts will range from 3 to 8 inches
across these areas.

Wednesday promises and opportunity
to scrape or dig out of any of the
precipitation that falls on Tuesday.
Some sunshine will return to most of
the eastern seaboard and temperatures
should climb above freezing. Some
colder air flowing into New England
behind the storm system will likely keep
the ice and snow from melting despite
increasing sunshine.
