POSTED: February 24, 2004 7:34 a.m.
Wet Snow in the East; Heavy Snow in the Southwest..
A relatively weak system is on its way east out of the Ohio Valley; it will exit off the east coast tonight. Snowfall amounts of 1-3 inches will be common in the mountains of northeast West Virginia, central Pennsylvania, and western Maryland, with the highest elevations picking up as much as 4 or 5 inches. Out into eastern Pennsylvania, all the way to Philadelphia, and to New York City, there'll be a coating to an inch or two, mainly on non-paved surfaces. In the cities of Baltimore and Washington, there'll be a mix of rain and wet snow, with no snow accumulation.
This system will stay south of New England.
A strong storm coming across the southwest part of the country will mean big snow amounts for primarily the mountains of northern and eastern New Mexico; as much as a foot of new snow today. There'll be a few inches in the western Colorado; 1-3 inches in the Wasatch in Utah. There'll be enough snow by tomorrow into the the Texas panhandle to cause slippery travel.
The next system coming into the Pacific Northwest will bring 1-3 inches of new snow to the Cascades, and 3-6 inches to the Sierra by tomorrow morning. There will also be 1-3 inches in northeastern Oregon, across northern and central Idaho, to the northwest corner of Wyoming. As much as 6 inches can accumulate in the Bitterroots.
