Latest update includes an expansion to the winter storm warnings to now include Virginia Beach, Norfolk, and Chesapeake, VA. A winter storm warning means severe winter weather immient or is now occurring. The winter storm warning is in effect until 7 PM EST for the tidewater area.
Snowfall rates of 1 inch per hour at times is expected to occur this afternoon in the Tidewater area as well as the peninsula vicinity. Snow total of 3-6 inches is expected from Newport News down into Norfolk, Chesapeake, and Virginia Beach. Most like will see 3 inches closer to the coast on the beach at Virginia Beach and closer to 6 inches in the Peninsula vicnity as well as Norfolk and Chesapeake. Isolated higher amounts are possible within this corridor of heaviest snow.
A coastal storm is expected to track up along the Carolina coast providing ample moisture over colder air in the tidewater area. Temperatures are expected to be colder than most forecast models indicated earlier, thus the expansion of the winter storm warning and also heavy snow to include the Virginia Tidewater. Travel in this area is strongly discouraged this afternoon as roads freeze over to a sheet of ice and become snow covered.
Enjoy it down in southeast Virginia. A definite treat the day after christmas.
