Batten down the hatches-this storm could be major-we could get half-3/4 inch of ice plus 2-3 inches of snow-man this could be our biggest storm in years-if it holds together-I'll be posting more later-have to put kids to bed!!

Looks as bad up US-75/I-29 in the Omaha/Council Bluffs vicinity, as well as the rest of central and eastern Nebraska into Iowa and northwest Missouri.

Stay safe everyone! :)

Not exactly. Being in KC at the time, it was 3 straight days of an ice storm warning. This doesn't have the look of being around that long. I do remember removing 4 inch thick ice chunks from the top of my vehicle when it was all said and done.

In my opinion, this will be worse-we won't have as much ice, but the temps. will be colder and we will freeze alot more-by Wed. night of that storm, we were close to 32 but the damage was done. 2002 began on Tuesday afternoon with sleet then cahnged to rain on Wed. morning then ended Wed. night-that Thursday, temps. rose above freezing and we had no wind. With this storm, we may not have as much ice, but we are going to have a strong wind and single digit temps. To me, this is a much more threatening storm. I really htink in this one, the roads will freeze much more-I remember driving in 2002 at the ht. of the storm and water was running down the storm drains-it never did really freeze on the roads. This is just my opinion and I am prob. way off base-the dynamics of this storm just seem to me to be more severe-esp. with winds and temps.

Well, I do remember we got lucky in the fact that in 2002 the winds didn't kick up. I just don't think this will have the same longevity that 2002 did.

Ugh, but the prospect of having to get around the city with it looking like a warzone again.....ugh. I'm lucky I didn't lose power during that time, but part of my apartment complex DID. The ironic part was the Home Depot near me also lost power. I wonder what generators could cost this time?

We've had freezing rain here all afternoon. In western parts of the metro, there's sleet mixed in.

I lived south of KC when I was but a child (alas, many moons ago!) and remember an ice storm in the early 70's. My younger brother and I had to dodge downed, snapping live power lines while we walked home from school mid-morning. Of course, back in my day, there was no such thing as bus service to elementary school.
We were completely iced in for days and had no power. The gas stove kept us fed and all the frozen food was moved to the back porch. I remember camping out in the living room in front of the fireplace and couldn't figure out why everyone else in the family was so stupid as to stay in their frozen bedrooms. Still haven't figured that one out yet....

Guess I'd better check in on my bro' and family who live out by the airport. I swear I will NEVER live north of the Mason-Dixon line again - I have shoveled my last driveway and de-iced my last car!

By the looks of the radar and the forecast for your area, David, I would hope that your school district wakes up and cancels, or they may have some problems with lawsuits - people in recks, people falling on sidewalks, etc.

David:

I really think your school will be canceled-Lawrence cancelled this afternoon. The 2002 ice storm was horrendous and I don't mean to down play that at all-it was quite an adventure and I dodged about 10 falling trees driving on Wornall and Ward parkway-it was kind of fun in sick sort of way!! My reason for my thoughts on this storm: I just think that we will have close to an inch of ice and then throw 1-2 inches of snow/sleet plus strong winds and single digit temps. man that will be rough!!

Here in lawrence we have prob. 1/4 to 1/2 inch of ice (oh if it were only all snow!!!) and now have sleet mixed in which will help w/ the power lines but make the roads horrendous!! Looking at radar, we have moisture all the way back in New Mexico and it is just redeveloping and filling in fast-looked to have a lull, but it seems to be filling in fast. Be safe everyone: KC also has a smalll streams flood advisory and has water over roads-wonder what that will be like when it drops to 25 tonight-what a storm and what a serious situation!!!

Another batch of moderate rain is moving thru Lawrence with a temp. of 28 degrees-this will really add to the ice totals-also, winds beiginning to pick up a bit-can hear the trees creaking-have power outages here in Lawrence as well.
