0 in Tucson?!?! I never would have imagined...

Actually, if you look at the Climo data, the record low for Tucson is +6F. During the same cold spell Phoenix hit 16F, Death Valley 15F and Fort Huachuca +1F. Sub zero readings have actually been recorded here in Cochise County with -6F the official lowest in the San Pedro Valley in 1949 and -10F in Willcox in 1962. There are some remote mesonet sites near the river close to Sierra Vista and in December 2003 one of them hit -2F at the same time that a +6F reading was recorded in Palominas and +8F in Douglas. Southern AZ we are, Banana Country we ain't.

Wow, crazy stuff!

of course, the weather has been fairly crazy as of late. For example, snow in Death Valley, rain and warm temperatures up and down the East Coast.

It would depend upon where the readings were taken at the time since the E and NW parts of Tucson closest to the washes are colder than both the airport and the U downtown. However, Jimmy Stewart the Met on KVOA-TV noted +6F as the record for the 7th and said that it was the coldest for Tucson. Might query the "gang" as to where they got that 0F reading from and point out the descrepancy.
