Snowstorm by the weekend or a dissapointing coastal miss!

#1 Postby krysof » Mon Jan 17, 2005 4:20 pm

Everyone on the east coast is getting excited, but I see dissapointment everywhere. I'm sorry but I refuse to believe that a snowstorm will actually happen this weekend. I realized I have gotten too excited and because I just remembered that so far, 4 potential snowstorms missed or just clipped the area slightly. We had good chances to get a snowstorm but Boston got it all. We also had ice storm potential twice from a central plains system. We have had so many disappointments so far and I think this winter have more disappointments. I won't get excited on a potential threatening snowstorm because its not reasonable after all the disappointments.

That's the spirit!!!

Seriously, there will be a big storm somewhere in the East late this weekend or early next week. Even the 18Z Eta at 84 hours shows most of the upper low off the Mexican west coast zooming east northeast and a shortwave coming over top the ridge in the Pacific Northwest with another rounding the western side of the Polar Vortex over eastern Canada. If they phase, per the Euro later in the period, then BAM! Something to watch will be the SOI, if it goes negative soon, that should send enough energy towards that system in the SW to kick it out. Also, watch the clippers before the main event this weekend. Each will progressively dig the trough slightly deeper and further west with time. If the one just prior to the weekend storm digs in like mad and develops a big storm well out to sea, that will likely allow the weekend storm to dig in even more (and further west) arguing for a major coastal storm.

This will be a widespread storm, so folks in the Plains, Lakes and Ohio Valley that have enjoyed some healthy snows will see another great layout of snow this week (clippers) and this weekend before the system finds the warmer waters off the east coast and bombs.

The low will probably bomb but just like a hurricane, the track is everything!

Or all the ducks are on the pond and you get March 2001.

I know the track is everything. If one can only dream. I would just love the blizzard of '96' for 2005.

You like not having power or internet access for days? Okay...

I like the snow, but you can have the power outages.

The power is the bad part. Everything has something that's bad and a blizzard has a lot of bad things. Traffic, accidents (pedestrian) sometimes freezing wind chills that can kill people, if it snows enough you could be stuck at home without power, food, or water and it may be freezing inside. I can go on and on.

You're right krysof! It can be a very dangerous situation. For some reason, I'm not getting myself all worked up about this one, either way. Last year FELT to me like we were going to have a big snow year. This year doesn't (I know, very scientific  ). It would be nice to have a snow event or two this season. When it comes to March 1 though, I'm ready for Spring!

Steph, I am ready for spring now! :) I have about 6 inches of snowfall still on the ground, compliments of a winterstorm TWO weeks ago. I know, I don't mean to brag... ;) but... Forget March 1, I want my spring!

Hey NEweatherguy:

Don't go south on me on yet!! I still need one good snow here in Lawrence to balance out the cold and one inch of ice I've had. Hopefully Feb. will be our time here. Good luck to the folks east-this looks to have the potential to be a very dangerous storm-be carefull.
