You guys down south batten the hatches down - the state radar has just exploded in the last two hours. Got so excited about the winter storm potential that I pretty much ignored the severe weather threat down south.
Up north, this looks like the real deal. Moderate snow in Grayson County with huge quarter size flakes (and occasionally larger) coming down and big convective bands setting up to our SW. Already 1/2 an inch or better on the grass and piling up quickly. Friend on Hwy. 82 west of Sherman said it was snowing as hard or harder than it did on Monday night when we picked up 5-6" in Grayson County.
I'm just an amateur weather bum, far from the caliber of the rest of you guys, but with about 10-12 hours or more of precip coming in here at the rate it's coming down now (and that's not even taking into account the potential from heavy convective bands), I'd say an 8-10" snowfall is possible and a 10-12" snowfall - or more - isn't out of the realm of possibility for someone in the Red River counties.
Depending on the temps in D/FW, I'd bet 4-7" in some areas north of I-20.
Seems to me that the changeover is much quicker than anticipated and the event is already going to the heavy side.
Other thoughts on accumulations?
And will this be a major tornado outbreak in S. Texas?
