Low projected by the weather service tonight has been adjusted to 23 degrees. Personal weather stations around town right now are hovering right around freezing so this may be plausible.

That would be catastrophic for any vegetation outside. It's going to get very brown very quickly.

Now 28.2 in western Plantation/Sunrise, 2nd day in a row yet no frost as it is bone dry. All stations near here mark 33-36 degrees, I may live in a colder spot as the everglades are literally walking distance from my home, very light winds too.

Looks like the West Coast was spared the worst - 34F at both TPA and SRQ.

Another record-breaking freeze last night, but definitely not as bad as it could have been (especially for the major metro areas). Most temperatures were a few degrees above the forecast.

http://www.srh.noaa.gov/mlb/blog.php

http://forecast.weather.gov/product.php ... glossary=1

For Orlando, this makes three official freezes during the month of December 2010. This beats the two experienced in December 2000, and is likely the highest number of freezes during the month of December since 1989. Luckily, none of the freezes have been anywhere near as severe as during that month (Dec '89) though, when Orlando had temperatures in the 20s during the afternoon hours of December 23rd and a morning low of 22F on Christmas Eve. The freeze length was "officially" about 22 to 23 hours total for KORL during that event (1-2pm on the 23rd until 12pm on the 24th), which is absolutely crazy compared to anything experienced since. looks like my area came through this in very good shape. the only evidence of cold i could find were nipped leaves on bananas with full exposure. otherwise, no issues at all. i was worried when the temp hit 32 just after midnight but it didn't continue to fall. it stayed right around 32 the whole night. it just didn't get cold enough. thank goodness...i feel like we dodged a bullet in my immediate area.

atmospheric mixing has allowed dewpoints to tank once again although they are a touch higher than yesterday. this airmass is slow to modify but dewpoints will probably rise more this evening allowing for more frost formation in cold areas tonight.

Storm system along with a warm front is coming up from the gulf bringing in clouds and some rain. This will warm things up nicely the next few days in Florida. What's interesting is that parts of the Florida panhandle will be much warmer tonight than in south Florida!

Pensacola

Tonight: A 20 percent chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 54. South wind around 15 mph.

Miami

Tonight: Mostly clear, with a low around 46. North wind between 3 and 9 mph.

Temps only got to about 36 last night, with little to no falling of the mercury after midnight. Quite odd

ANOTHER ARCTIC FRONT?
However...both the GFS and European model (ecmwf) continue to indicate that a more
amplified pattern will develop across much of North America by the
end of next week...as another upper low deepens and digs
southeastward across the Great Lakes and middle-Atlantic region while
a middle-level ridge builds over the Central Plains. This may allow
yet another surge of cold Arctic air to invade South Florida by
the end of next week.
I like Jeff Masters theory on the cold and Global climate change.

There is not going to be another artic front because Jeff Masters article above stated that NOrth America would see seasonal temps for next two weeks. All my plants are completely destoryed cant take another front.

Interesting climate statement from the NWS Jax office in their AFD at 9:00 a.m. regarding our very cold December this year:

TODAY MARKS THE 10TH DAY IN THE MONTH OF DECEMBER THAT JACKSONVILLE
HAS RECORDED A MIN TEMP OF 32 DEGREES OR LESS. THIS RANKS SECOND
ALL-TIME BEHIND THE 12 DAYS THAT REACHED 32 DEGREES OR LESS IN
DECEMBER OF 2000. WITH POTENTIAL LIGHT FREEZE EVENTS POSSIBLE NEXT
WEEK IT APPEARS AS THOUGH THE ALL-TIME RECORD MAY BE BROKEN.

This is very impressive in that here in the northside of Jax we have already had 10 freezes already and technically we have not officially started the first day of winter yet, which is Dec. 22. The average number of total freezes during the winter season at the NWS office in Jax is 18.

It remains to be seen if this Negative NAO will continue into January. Typically La Nina winters are warmer and drier than average in these parts. But, the Negative NAO has held firm for this month and we shall see if the pattern will finally relent to a typical La Nina pattern the rest of this winter.

I think your right. Mainly because the GFS is the only one showing a chance. Euro to me is more reliable this far out. It will flip-flop.

I was in Jacksonville on Business Tue/Wed of this week. I have to say, it felt colder there than last time I went skiing in Colorado. Painfully cold in the evening when we walked to a restaurant from the hotel for dinner. I never felt that cold skiing.

I try to explain to people that 34F and pouring rain feels colder than 20F and light snow.

Its the dampness that gets you, Ive felt warmer in the teens in the mountains than I do at mid 30s in Jax.

This morning was a classic example, temps of 27F with dewpoints of 25F.
Cold and moisture suck.

Now the NWS is talking back door front. Not Arctic.

Extended period...Sunday through Thursday...showers end Sunday
morning with cooler min/maximum temperatures expected but not as cold as what S
fla just went through as a modified Canadian air mass moves over the
area. Long range models indicate a strong short wave moving off of
New England which sends a backdoor cold front towards S fla which
will pass through the area Wednesday night/early Thursday with
possibly some shower activity but left out of the forecast at this
time.

IT'S BACK..........

ter Christmas the current zonal pattern may become more
amplified again and there is the potential for another cold
airmass to move into S Florida. Over the past few nights guidance has
been, for the most part, indicating the potential for much below
normal temperatures in the 7 to 10 day time frame, however this solution
is now entering the end of the forecast period and does require a
mention.
