New Orleans forecast discussion gives us "non zero" chance at some freezing drizzle-haha

"There is
a non-zero chance of some very light precipitation where
temperatures approach freezing overnight tonight. Based on
forecast soundings, sleet or snow are not justified as
precipitation types. At this time, the threat of freezing rain is
too low to mention in the forecast north of Interstate 12 tonight,
but we will continue to monitor the situation"

Woke up. 25 degrees at 5am, wind still blowing, advecting air from the Arctic netheregions.

Grabbed a sweat shirt to wear under heavy blanket. Back to bed. :

The latest HRRR is painting wintry mix for Austin this morning. I wonder if the upper levels will let it reach the ground??

12 degrees at the Austin College weather station a few mikes west of here. 14 at the North Texas Regional Airport.

It's 11 in Gainesville and 9 in W-Falls. One degree in OKC, zero at Amarillo and sub-zero in the northern Texas Panhandle and in NW Oklahoma.

Pretty stout December cold front. :cold:

A "Bears Watching " AFD snippet from Fort Worth NWS this morning:

"Substantial differences exist between the GFS and ECMWF forecast solutions for the Christmas Eve/Christmas Day timeframe, and thus the confidence in the forecast during this period is quite low. The 00z Euro certainly seems more reasonable, depicting an energetic trough transiting the Central Plains during this period and dragging a (mostly) dry front through North Texas. The 00z GFS solution, on the other hand, suggests a thrilling Christmas weekend in store for weather enthusiasts, with a deep closed low barreling through North Central Texas (implying thunderstorms AND snow). The 00z GFS ensemble members are frankly all over the map, and lend very little confidence to this kind of solution at the moment. For now, have included some small pops for our eastern counties through Christmas Day (in line with the ECMWF), but have otherwise leaned away from the excitement advertised by the GFS. This will certainly be a period to monitor, but for now, the chance of significant impacts appears low."

And OKC's take:

"There are many uncertainties in the extended forecast. It appears a mid to upper trough will start to dig across the western CONUS by early next weekend, but the GFS may be too aggressive with the depth of the trough. On the other hand, the ECMWF may be a bit to zonal. Based on all ensemble solutions (CMCE, EPE, GEFS) and the
GDPS (Canadian) deterministic solution, decided to go somewhere between the two which is close to the GDPS. That being said, will keep SChc PoPs in for Christmas Eve/Day. Confidence is way too low to mention anything higher than this."

It's 26 degrees with a wind chill of 15 here at the Portastorm Weather Center in scenic southwest Austin. Our Grey Goose stock has been moved outdoors for that extra chill.

If anything was falling from the sky it would likely evaporate before reaching the ground I'm afraid. Much too dry at the lower levels.

Overnight low at my weather station was 16. As soon as the winds die down, I've got a lot of leaf raking to do. 8-)
