lol its just one run of the GFS, 12z cmc is going in the right direction , it shows a bit more moisture to work with with the shortwave, inlike past runs where it was suppressing anything

Re: Texas Winter 2023-2024
In light of the craziness of the GFS recently I am not jumping off a bridge yet.
Others are trending in the right direction.
I think there is a decent chance for a small storm at least.
I admit I want a snow day or 2, but Monday is a holiday anyway. I don't want an entire week off, though, with work deadlines...

That s/w energy is too weak, needs to be stronger coming out of the pacific and/or TPV weaker or it's going to get swallowed up by it...

Maybe the extreme cold will kick off some local lake effect snowstorms in North Texas that the models can't see.
We can watch the snowflakes gently fall from the windows in our powerless homes.

I am not concerned about the 12z GFS run, that system is still out over the pacific so models are going to struggle with it until its actually ashore, hope we can get something out it, a dry cold really really sucks

Ercot has issued an OCN. Prepare for darkness. "The OCN is the first of four levels of communication issued by ERCOT in anticipation of a possible Emergency Condition."

“OCN issued for the predicted extreme cold weather event for the ERCOT Region Monday, January 15, 2024 through Wednesday, January 17, 2024.”

I'm going get more firewood tomorrow before the rush. And get some cans of soup to warm up on the gas stove.
Right now, my biggest concern is the youngest boy is scheduled to leave next Wed to head down to Nacogdoches for the start of Spring Semester. We may have to try and push him out the door a few days earlier, else he may miss some days of class if the roads are problematic mid-week.

Yeah, Houston-based meteorologist Matt Lanza is seriously pissed at Maue for his X post from earlier ... the climate emergency one. Lanza believes Maue is unnecessarily inciting panic. I'm guessing this was Maue's next response.

You know, all kidding aside, all of us should be prepared anyhow for any kind of disruption in utilities after what we've experienced over the last several years. Whether it actually happens or not, preparation for a household is just common sense.
Now ... like Ntxw said ... everyone run to HEB for bread and milk!!

Here comes yet another failure from ERCOT, I highly doubt the grid holds with the kind of cold coming

Re: Texas Winter 2023-2024
It was colder than this last winter and it’s been almost that cold in January many times since 1985 (quite a few 13s, 14s, and 15s). Climate emergency is overhyping it.

Honestly I think he is doing it on purpose. Through his tweets I think he is taking subtle jabs at the MSM and how they describe/headline weather events. Everything nowadays is "Extreme", "Unprecedented", "Climate emergency" "Climate disaster", and so forth. If you follow him closely one can get the sarcasm and why. I think he is fed up of all weather events being overhyped. Probably a little careless on his part considering the amount of followers he has that are just casual weather enthusiasts, and professionals that follow as well.

Re: Texas Winter 2023-2024
Okay gang. Refresh my memory. I’ve been a member of this board for years. With regard to the GFS, isn’t it fairly unreliable until 1-3 days out? Isn’t that the model that mysteriously makes cold fronts and winter storm systems magically vanish from days 3-5, only to bring them back again on the 1-3 day runs? Don’t we always go through this bummed out scenario because of one or two bad GFS runs, or am I living in a Heat Miser dream?
