Have a lunch date with Phil Klotzach on Monday. Will see what he thinks about 2016 hurricane season analogs.

I got caught out in a nice storm earlier this evening in Houston. Had about pea size hail.

FWD just added snow into the forecast in the north metro tonight... I thought at first weatherbug had lost its mind but its real :double:

Edit: I wonder if this is a mistake, nothing in the AFD about changes to the snow forecast which has been NW of the metro.

UNDERNEATH THE UPPER LEVEL LOW AND BEHIND THE TROUGH AXIS...AN
AREA OF LIGHT SNOW OR A RAIN/SNOW MIX HAS BEEN OCCURRING TONIGHT.
AS THE UPPER LEVEL SYSTEM TRAVERSES THE REGION THIS
MORNING...ADDITIONAL LIGHT RAIN MAY OCCUR NORTH OF A COMANCHE TO
HILLSBORO TO ATHENS LINE. TEMPERATURES WITHIN THE UPPER LEVEL
TROUGH ARE PRETTY COLD AROUND -26 DEGREES CELSIUS WHICH SUPPORTS
THE POTENTIAL FOR LIGHT SNOW TO MIX WITH ANY LIGHT RAIN THIS
MORNING NORTH AND WEST OF A LINE FROM COMANCHE TO ENNIS TO DURANT
OKLAHOMA. IT IS POSSIBLE THERE COULD BE A BRIEF CHANGEOVER TO ALL
SNOW IN OUR NORTHWESTERN COUNTIES BUT MOISTURE IN THE SNOW GROWTH
ZONE WILL BE EXITING THE AREA AT THE SAME TIME...WORKING AGAINST
ANY PRECIPITATION. SURFACE TEMPERATURES WILL REMAIN ABOVE FREEZING
THIS MORNING AND NO IMPACTS TO TRAVEL ARE EXPECTED. NO
ACCUMULATIONS ARE EXPECTED EITHER BUT IF THERE IS A CHANGEOVER TO
ALL SNOW...VERY SMALL ACCUMULATIONS ON ELEVATED OR EXPOSED
SURFACES COULD OCCUR. ANY PRECIPITATION IS EXPECTED TO END THIS
MORNING.

Don't get your hope up too high, RUC indicates only a very thin cloud layer around 3000 ft up this afternoon/evening. It would be quite hard to squeeze any moisture out of it.

We had some 1/2" to 1" diameter hail last evening when the line moved through SW Houston.

Was in the heights during one of the cells yesterday and had dime sized hail easily. Was very nervous when i saw how the storms looked when they popped up.

Ryan - when you say bad boundary layer, what do you mean? I get elevated, as in they popped up over a certain layer in the atmosphere. Is that what you mean?

Those storms really exploded on us.

Per NWS:

Boundary Layer
In general, a layer of air adjacent to a bounding surface. Specifically, the term most often refers to the planetary boundary layer, which is the layer within which the effects of friction are significant. For the earth, this layer is considered to be roughly the lowest one or two kilometers of the atmosphere. It is within this layer that temperatures are most strongly affected by daytime insolation and nighttime radiational cooling, and winds are affected by friction with the earth's surface. The effects of friction die out gradually with increasing height, so the "top" of this layer cannot be defined exactly.

There is a thin layer immediately above the earth's surface known as the surface boundary layer (or simply the surface layer). This layer is only a portion of the planetary boundary layer, and represents the layer within which friction effects are more or less constant throughout (as opposed to decreasing with height, as they do above it). The surface boundary layer is roughly 10 meters thick (from the surface up to 10 m above the ground), but again the exact depth is indeterminate. Like friction, the effects of insolation and radiational cooling are strongest within this layer.

Here is a decent explanation of the difference between surface-based and elevated storms:

Given the performance of the GFS this winter, why not give the CMC a shot.

The flurries didn't materialize this morning, and precip is now out on Monday. Halfway through without a hint of sleet or snow, I'm ready to say...WINTER CANCEL!

Said the same thing last year, then bam, we had ice and snow into March. Winter is far from over for NTX as we usually don't get our winter precipitation till late January thru early March. It's coming, you just have to believe :froze:

It is easy to get discouraged considering half of winter is in the books. Heck, I am a little weather depressed myself. Today has helped with cloudy skies, strong winds, and temps around 40 all day. Feels great outside. But we are hardly through with winter. The Captain is right, we have a several weeks to get it together for some winter fun. It's not like this area receives much in the way of winter precip anyway. Then look at what happened towards the latter stages of winter the last two years. Winter magic. I need to learn patience also but winter has its surprises. No give up yet. Frustration yes, but no give up. Now where is my snow!!!
