The record snowcover across Canada and Siberia continues to increase at a very fast rate. It is more extensive and deep then it was at this time in both 2002 and 2003. It's only a matter of time before pieces of that snow-cooled arctic air starts to invade the U.S. I would think that we are going to have a major, early-season arctic outbreak by the middle of November.

Ya not only is it snowing it also quite cold for this early in the year. Its froze for 10 straight days now and stayed cold the whole day. the snow belt continues to drop at a very fast rate. Get this the first snow in the mountains was in August. And evey one thought that Eastern U.S. would get a rough ride this winter. Even though it early we got a good dumping for this early in the year. And it wont melt becuase its cold.

I bet it is ! I've been looking at some of the Nunavut (arctic Canada)temps up there and they're running sub-zero in many areas in the last 10 days or so, particularly around Isachsen:

Well I am now beginning to arrive at a crossroads........in between my love of my 77/64 Nags Head beach jebwalk........and all the talk of an EARLY COLD SNOWY WINTER in the East.

Looking at snow cover through yesterday it now appears that it has fallen behind last year at this time. It isn't far behind though. One big storm could change all that.

I haven't looked extensively at the models for next week, but what I have seen tells me it could get very interesting late next week and weekend in the lower plains and TX. could be a freeze line coming very close to the upper TX coast?

Looks to me like the snow cover is way behind compared to this time last year, at least in the Conus. And the cold air mass we were expecting here in SE TX, though still cool for us, has certainly modified from the intial of what was being shown a week ago.

It's hard to compare snow cover to last year, earlier this season snow cover was way ahead in the west and behind in the east. The Rockies have had allot of early snow this year as well as the higher area's of CA. The snow in TX was early as well.

Now that the snow has returned to southern Canada and across the Northern U.S you can now expect to see more artic fronts carring colder air making it's way south and east into the Con U.S :jacket:

Look how the snow cover exploded over the western half of the U.S and into the plain states. This is only the begining for for what will be a cold nasty winter for much of the centeral plains and southern states.

This morning here in Dallas/Ft Worth we are seeing sleet mixed with rain and some light snow in the northern counties and freezing rain to the south, it should last till noon with a high of about 42 and a hard freeze tonight of 27.

Comparison with this time last year shows a much larger area of snow cover this year than last year. Will the trend continue?
