It still looks like the west is still receiving most of the snow.

Lake Erie is ice

#29 Postby jimvb » Sun Feb 11, 2007 8:54 pm

Has anyone been watching the snow cover graphics recently and noticed the increase in the East and the decrease in the West? Also, has anyone noticed that the Oswego region is getting all the snow and Buffalo is getting hardly any? Oswego's snow is lake effect from Lake Ontario, and the still unfrozen lake is blowing all kinds of moisture into the cold air, causing the snow. Buffalo is not going to get much more of this kind of snow this year. Why? Because Lake Erie, Buffalo's lake effect engine, is completely covered with ice. Some of the lake effect snow that Buffalo may get will be from Lake Ontario, but by and large, its lake effect engine has been turned off.

Good graphics

#31 Postby jimvb » Sat Feb 17, 2007 10:20 am

Good graphic. But it is wrong, in at least one place. It clearly indicates snow on the ground at the place where the James River becomes tidal near Richmond, Virginia; however, there is not a single trace of snow on the ground anywhere in the Richmond metropolitan area except some farther out northern and western suburbs. There is none at my home in Chester.

It does indicate the huge piles of snow near Oswego, NY, and shows that there are more huge piles of the stuff to the east of Oswego about halfway to Albany. It also reveals all this media publicity about the Oswego area's snow, including Mexico, Parish and so forth, to be media hype. The snow is much deeper out in the mountains of some of the western areas, such as Alberta, Montana, Idaho, and Yellowstone Park.

Marching Forth

#32 Postby jimvb » Tue Mar 06, 2007 11:39 pm

Looks like NOAA is Marching 4th with the snow cover graphics. They are still displaying March 4 graphics, with one March 5 graphic. Today is March 6. What happened?

Anything using sattelite interpretation and analysis is going to have some errors unfortunately. The site does get behind at times. Wow we have had some heavy slows in recent weeks! Some deep snow out there..even in the ~flatlands.. 8-)

Yeah, but it's normal for them to get that much snow...it's not normal to get that much snow in the Oswego area.

Re: 2006/2007 Snow coverage graphics

#39 Postby jimvb » Sat Aug 18, 2007 8:15 am

I know all the talk today is about the Tropics and Hurricane Dean, but has anyone else but me noticed what is happening on the snow coverage graphics that are in this thread? Compare 2007 August 17 with 2006 August 17, for instance. There is much less ice in the Arctic Ocean this year than last, especially near Alaska and eastern Russia. This seems to confirm global warming concerned scientist's fear that one year in the future, ALL the ice in the Arctic Ocean will melt. So it is not just hype. Some of this is actually happening.

Yes, I have noticed. It is projected that we will see a new all-time ice coverage low come September.
