-12 here this morning. Tied a record low. I went outside at 7:00 just to see what it feels like. The wind was calm, but it still felt plenty cold.

31ºF here in Houston last night. We have had more freezes than I remember over the last several winters already this winter, but nothing exceptionally cold yet. We are just now moving into what is normally our coldest time of the winter and it really isn't looking impressive at all.

Vbhoutex I'd love to send down some (ALL
) of our cold to you!!! It truly feels like we are on a roller coaster here:
Coldest today -27°C/ -16.6°F.
Feels like -40°C/-40°F Weather Warning
Wind chill warning for Moose Jaw-Pense-Central Butte-Craik »
Last time I checked we are due to warm up again pretty quick so somebody is gonna get it.

I haven't checked the windchill values everywhere in the province of Saskatchewan but I do know Regina is currently showing -23°F with a windchill of -51°F (we, yippee, are a few degrees warmer than our neighbour).
My husband had to laugh when the weather channel stated Inuvik, NWT would be -45 with windchill while making a big point of how cold and nasty it would be up there (this winter we have been recording temperatures much colder than locations next to the Arctic ocean). I'm looking so forward to getting any furnace installed and working.

SS I just can't even imagine living in that kind of weather. I know many people do and I would imagine some may even enjoy it, but as much as I like a good cold snap and even winter precipitation(preferably snow)I'm not too sure I could endure it for months on end. We have some very close friends who have moved to Gulf Shores, AL till April to get away from the weather they have had in Milton, WI this year. She likened it to an "Arctic wasteland", which I know is a huge exaggeration, but after weeks with snow on the ground and 10" more due with below zero highs expected I know she prevailed on her husband to head south. Since they have lived up there for many years I know it must have been brutal.

vbhoutex come fall I hit a point where I dread what's to come but most of the time the winter isn't as bad as what my mind was picturing. I love seeing the ground covered in white with our extremely blue skies above (so much prettier than seeing the dead and worn out fall browns) and given the duration of our winter when spring comes one gets a natural high. The summers where we've received Texas high heat and humidity I dread so much more (prolly wouldn't be so bad if we had A/C except those that have it usually have breakdowns....the A/C's that were sold here were made for our usual "dry" heat not the jungle type humidity we've been getting the past few years).
We are prepared for winter.......we have ice tires on our car (we usually get a inch or two rain "just" before the temps plummet and it remains, in many places, for the duration), we do know how to drive on it (the younguns can be a problem however
, we have the proper winter wear (good to -40F) and the majority know not to leave their vehicles if they breakdown (those that don't usually don't survive the consequences). Like RL3AO I'm in a place that suits me.......my ancestors came from Switzerland and the Outer Hebrides so being more or less comfortable living in tougher conditions is most likely in my genes.
I must admit there are times where I want to type "you guys are a bunch of wimps" when I see people at this site complaining about the cold (and it's above zero F where they are

You would think I would have some of the cold stuff in my genes since we hail from Germany/Prussua and Scotland. I guess I've been in the South too long(started in Kansas, moved to FL at 3 yrs and to Texas at 17 yrs.). I am fascinated by extreme cold and winter weather, but don't think I could handle it for long periods of time. Maybe I would get used to it.
As I have always said, to each his own, and I will hold on to the brutal heat and humidity we have and let you have your extreme cold. I just hope you get all your furnace probs etc. taken care of!!

Thanks vbhoutex re getting a new heating system......I must say however at this point we know the worst of winter is over (we usually only get one long lasting cold spell) and now we are waiting to see if the Canadian Federal Government economy boosting "energy saving renovating" plan will make it through Parliament. If it does we will be looking at more than just updating our boiler and/or furnace.
Our electric heaters are doing a wonderful job of heating the house when it's -20 F or warmer (but I do tend to whine when we are in the -40 range)....I never did like having icicles forming on my toes when sleeping. ;D
I should mention that here everyone's furnace here is controlled by electricity (the heating source however is natural gas). If we have a power outage everyone is in the same boat as us so that is probably why we have minimal power outages....SaskPower has a good relay system that limits the down time and they are quick to switch to another grid if they can't repair the transformer right away (power lines are also repaired quickly). The longest I can remember being without power is about 1 hour (years ago it was a different story).
The far north of Saskatchewan only has one line going in however (those that live there definitely have a generator as backup).
Coldest overnight -7.6 F forecasted to reach a balmy +26.6 degree Fahrenheit

29.6ºf here at the house this am. Burbs were probably down into the mid 20's in a few locations. Predictions were for 32ºf in the "city".
