Reed Timmer seems to think the worst of today will be the third round coming through NTX, this evening/overnight. Seems like the solar radiation has been on our side throughout the middle of the day. I have gotten a decent amount of rain but just a light glaze on trees.

Well, at the my office in Southtown SA, it’s about 34°. Still wet outside, but there hasn’t been any precip since about 10 AM.

As for the temperature back at the house, I don’t know which weather app to believe. One app says it’s 35° (highly doubt that). Another app says 28° (more believable). Either way, I think this is SA’s last night of this stuff. We got saved last night because of too much freezing rain. Assuming that it brought some warm air closer to the surface. Might’ve accumulated on trees and higher flyovers, but didn’t really allow any accumulation on streets and “regular” bridges.

My weather station is showing rapidly dropping solar radiation, so likely clouds are thicker. Dewpoint is rapidly going up as well. Temp is steady right between 27 and 28, no increase. I still have sleet on the ground and roofs.

Lots of precip moving into DFW from the SW. Def stay off the roads now imo until tomorrow midday

Temp spike 2.5 degrees in the last hour! Pretty random and hard to believe.

Temps Tyler and NW did not ever make it above freezing so icing is still a concern until heavier precip moves in and warms the surface layer.

FYI while not the severe cold with lows DFW is at 80 hours of below freezing with at least another 12 hours to go so 90-100 hours range possible.

In your experience, you've seen raindrops fall from the sky, land on a car and instantly turn to ice?

I remember experiencing this once many years ago in Missouri. The air temperature was extremely cold, but very shallow with warm air aloft. As the warm(er) rain fell through the very cold shallow air mass it would literally freeze as soon as it hit the windshield.

Must have been lower than 0 or that was a thicker cold layer. Most freezers at 0F still takes time to freeze water to ice. If you've ever made ice cubes.

Don't remember the exact temp, but it was freezing cold. Just remember the droplets instantly freezing on the windshield making the wipers useless.

I remembered that the Freezing Rain turned into ice in just several seconds when it was in the teens and 20s several years ago.

Amazing, the most underrated (under modeled) cold snap I’ve ever seen!

I actually fell one time when crossing a street even with hiking boots with very good grip…just not made for skating, lol. So the white stuff is definitely disappearing but the ice is more present than before.

I am off Basswood and 35...where are you located? I haven't tested it, but I will say the road looks slick, not wet. Temp IMBY fluctuates between 27 and barely 28.

I live near Keller Central high school, east of beach and heritage trace in Heritage subdivision.

Looks like the 4 pm observation at the Tyler airport did reach 33F. But your point still stands.

Our light glaze from early this morning quickly melted. Temperature has risen to 35F at my house in Longview, and I would be surprised if we make it below 32F again.

Yep second longest freeze of the 2020s up here behind Feb 2021.

Sometimes, the longest freezes are those that are the least expected.

Heaviest it's been all day now, and I can confirm it's now back to sleet for a bit. Think still some freezing rain in it though.
